About this product

Product Information

Beginning with Jesus' birth, Ken Bailey leads us on a kaleidoscopic study of Jesus in the four Gospels. Bailey examines the life and ministry of Jesus with attention to the Lord's Prayer, the Beatitudes, Jesus' relationship to women and especially Jesus' parables. Throughout the author employs his trademark expertise as a master of Middle Eastern culture to lead us into a deeper understanding of the person and significance of Jesus, lifting away the obscuring layers of modern Western interpretation to reveal Jesus in the light of his actual historical and cultural setting.

  • 3-D glasses for reading the Gospels

Long ago and far away, within a culture that's very different from the 21st Century West, Jesus was born, lived, died and rose. For centuries, we (lay people) have understood that the records of his life and teaching have to be translated for us from the original language(s) into our own. We've been slower to realise that cultural differences influence - should I say hinder - our understanding. This book aims to be a major help with that. This is arguably not a book for someone with reduced hand strength or vision - my copy is 35mm thick and the print is small! However I'm not finding it heavy to read. It would work well as a reference book; it's divided into sections and the chapters (averaging less than 13 pages) can stand alone. Each chapter refers to a specific set of bible verses. But on the other hand, there is a logical flow and inner coherence, which means that it can be read as a book. It's not an encyclopaedia. It's aimed at people who know the bible reasonably well but are not biblical scholars particularly, or any other kind of scholar for that matter. In my view (so far) it succeeds in being accessible. It's not so much that the Gospels are coming into focus, it's more that I'm seeing depth and perspective better.

  • Seeing Jesus more Clearly

This review is academic yet simple to read and understand. He writes briefly yet fully with excellent summaries. In understanding the context and cultural background of many of the situations in which Jesus speaks or acts makes his life much more real and relevant to our's today. It's a great read yet still easy on the brain!

  • Excellent hermeneutics

A brilliant and engaging insight into familiar Bible passages from the viewpoint of 1st Century Palestinian culture and understanding. This book is an essential accompaniment to exegetical Biblical study for academics, preachers and theological students, and for anyone who wishes to engage more deeply with what the Bible has to say.
