Good in parts
It's a military techno-thriller with a mix of Cold War 'what if', some informed guesswork on how certain events might develop, and a two-dimensional, characterless and unconvincing love interest. Certain of the scenarios - Russian tank/motor rifle regiment battles, submarine ops centre exchanges - seem to reflect an almost 'insider briefing'. Others are disappointingly weak and inadequate while others still, including several of the air-air exchanges, are implausible. I compare it unfavourably with Sir John Hackett's 'The Third World War'. The book ( revisited ) is worth the small cost, second-hand. Totally absorbing from end to end
This is I believe Tom Clancy's most definitive novel. I was absorbed from the very first pages through to the last, many a time unable to put it down and awaiting the next opportunity to get back to it. The action, layout, events, characters, all totally absorbing and believable. As a work of fiction it showed the capabilities of military hardware in a modern day setting. which also showed a great level of research.
