I was asked if I’d like to review Bowie’s “Is It Any Wonder?” CD version and I am happy to, as was only just listening to it today.
Only 6 tracks and it can be quite highly priced to get a copy (I paid £29 which I think is at the low end) but they are 6 tracks worth having...
Bowie’s vocals seem like he is really respecting and presenting his old songs (Man Who Sold the World, Stay, I Can’t Read) powerfully. Rather than just repeating the well worn lyrics he puts lots of little flicks and touches to them.
The guitar riff on ‘Stay’ sounds really sharp and rocks beautifully, Fun (Clownboy Mix) and Nuts are more experimental and a good listen but it is probably the Man Who Sold The World (Live Eno Mix) that delights me the most... it starts out without the iconic guitar riff of MWSTW and the song is delivered in a laid back almost Portishead chilled style... but then, towards the end that iconic riff appears sounding like the arrival of a swarm of angry buzzing bees swirling around the soundscape... it really sends shivers down my spine and it is truly a touch of genius. But is that any wonder?
