It looks like the previous Raspberry Pi but it is hugely improved.

The 4B version of the Raspberry Pi is an excellent improvement because of the much improved processor and the improved bus speed with genuine USB 3 sockets and genuine 1Gbit network socket. There are plenty of Linux distribution images ready for it and a few genuine 64 bit ones such as Ubuntu. A true linux geek would be happy to use this as an everyday workstation with a decent high resolution screen providing a desktop environment ( KDE is the one I would recommend). Meanwhile it retains the general purpose input output interface which makes it so attractive as a control device for robotics and other functions. Increased power supply wattage allows the USB 3 sockets to supply power to devices which do not have external power supplies so very large capacity storage devices are now also fast enough to make 1 Tbyte or more of external storage practical. The use of an SD card as a boot device and system root is probably an anomaly and I suspect (hope?) that firmware updates will soon allow direct booting from USB 3 devices. For the time being it is possible to transfer most of the functionality away from the SD card if you have the expertise.

  • Most critical review

    A waste of money.

So I opted for the 4GB Raspberry pi 4b thinking it would handle things easily, I first i tried an android system which performed worse than I expected, then I tried the Raspbian desktop OS, while this was better, streaming was extremely poor with sync tearing and even worse on a large 4k tv, personally i think that their claims of what it can do is borderline complete lies.

  • Way better than the 3B+

Way better than the 3B+ I had before for surfing the net, the 4GB of memory makes all the difference. It's still not fast enough for a power user like myself for a daily driver but great for a shed, backup PC etc. Do get a heat sink case otherwise it will overheat and slow down.

  • Small, competent little wonder.

This new Raspberry Pi is very fast, 4 gb internal memory is great and enough to run Raspberry Pie OS. I've used it to set up an Audio streamer with Volumio and a DAC on top of the Raspberry Pi. It works really well and the sound is fantastic.

  • Excellent value for learning and general use

I've purchased new Rpi4 after Odroid-C2 and Rpi3 to try using it as a general desktop PC. I've installed Raspbian with Mate desktop, and I am very impressed. New Rpi4 CPU is about twice as fast as Rpi3, and with more RAM and USB3 storage it feels lot more responsive. It can be used to learn programming and lots of different applications, playing videos or Kodi media server - everything I've tried worked well, and support via community is excellent ! I've also tried installing Manjaro Linux for 64 bit experience, and it works well. Don't expect that it will match the speed of a modern laptop or desktop PC, but thats not what Rpi4 is designed for, and considering the price it represents excellent value for money. Note that in a few minutes of use it becomes very hot, so it does need a cooling - I bought passive metal casing which is noise-free and seems to be sufficient.

  • A Raspberry pi 4 model b

Perfectly good brand new raspberry pi 4 model b. Lowest price I found for this product new. Great tool for home DIY automation projects. I used it as a MotioneeyeOS server for home surveillance but you could use it for anything.

  • Love it

So much fun to be had, great with the box and dual fans I also bought. Have already completed one little project, looking forward to doing many more. Is pretty easy to use and understand and you can use it for all sorts of stuff, I recommend getting a project book or some of the work sheets available from the raspberry pi official website.

  • Music player

Although I have music streaming service I am not happy, buffering, dropouts and poor sound from my streaming device. I wanted a dedicated music player, something that stores my local music and can plug directly in to a amp, The Raspberry pi with Volumio serves this purpose superbly with a dac, so good to hear once again great sound without hiccups.

  • Fast and Furious.

This little Pi is a real game-changer. Using it for running Octoprint. It is super fast and has transformed my 3D printing. I have used the Pi Zero ( don't bother for 3D printing and or camera work, far to slow) and bought this Pi 4 4Gb to replace one of my Pi3B+ which blew a fuse and other parts on the board. Just a micro fast machine.

  • Works, but needed some hours to set up on my screen

Like my Pi4 8g, this gives no hdmi signal following the rainbow splash screen, unless I use Ubuntu. I needed to remove out an entry in config.txt to get it to work, but it works reliably and we'll with Ubuntu. With Pi OS, Ssh gives an immediate response, so the machine is booting up and working, but not giving a signal to HDMI. The cable and the screen work fine with other sources. I think this is an unfortunate interplay between their firmware , software and my hardware. Pi3 gave a reliable HDMI signal on the same setup. From the forums, I see this is a reported issue, not just a problem with this unit.
