Budget Bass
I once owned an American Fender 4 string jazz bass but I traded it several years ago and I've been feeling regrets lately so I decided to go budget on another jazz bass. Seeing the 5 string version and how much I enjoy my Yamaha TR5 fretless bass, I figured I'd go 5 string on the jazz too. I went into this knowing I wanted to do some upgrades anyway. To my surprise, this guitar came to me in excellent condition though the packaging made me initially skeptical of how it was going to look. I don't think they used the original packaging. Either way, after tuning it up, it seemed to play pretty nice. The pickups were rather noisy unless they ran together and cancelled out the single coil noise but they sounded pretty good. I did replace the pickups with Seymore Duncan Quarter Pounders along with replacing the three pots, cap, jack and I installed real Fender Jazz knobs due I didn't like the feel of the Squier pointy knobs, The next thing I'm going to do it install top side fret dots due I can't see the tiny black ones on there now. But, as far as the guitar goes in general, it's a fun bass to play. It's the classic Fender Jazz Sunburst style that I always adored. As for it being a Squier, the playability is there other than it having better componentry. The neck is much wider than my Yamaha but I can get used to it. After searching on-line for used Fender Jazz guitars, I suppose I could have, should have went that route rather than buying a Squier and investing 200 dollars into it though. But, it's done now and I'll just have a pretty bass guitar that I won't need to fuss too much about if it gets bumped around somehow. It does sound awesome with the upgrades and it looks nice too. There are used Fender guitars for around 4 to 5 hundred so you'll have to decide on your route. For an out of the box guitar though, it does work.
