Nico, a life on the edge of The Frozen Borderline
I got this very rare 2CD rerelease of Nico’s ‘The Marble Index’ and ‘Desertshore’ albums, made nearly 50 years ago. The remasters are immaculate renditions of original unplayed vinyl first pressings, including most of the unreleased outtakes. No one ever sang like Nico, and her voice takes you to the darkest places imaginable - and then a bit further. The sparse musical arrangements and accompaniments by Lou Reid and John Cale fit Nico’s harmonium playing like a hand in a glove. It doesn’t sound dated at all, and is totally within the now of what is happening in the world. This is the most amazing music that I am lucky to have, and shall listen to it in all its complexity and marvellous simplicity for the rest of my life.
