At the 3rd Generation iPod nanos were at the top of their game
The 3rd Generation iPod was, I think, the best design Apple ever had for this product. I'll take the tactile value of the click wheel over a touch screen any day. I don't have big fingers, but I still find it much more convenient to scroll through options using the rotary dial and click the outer parts to speed through long recordings to the part I want. That is particularly true at night, when I might not be looking at the device directly. It's possible for a portable music player to be too small - the later versions of this device were, in my view. But the nano 3rd Gen has a screen that's big enough (and lights up - good for wandering the house at night!) to be visible, yet doesn't suffer the false positive clicks and mystery behaviour of a touch screen. It's smooth and silver and wonderful - like a tiny Macbook Pro. The 3rd Gen nano lacks a clip, but it is not hard to find soft cases with a big easy clip to go on clothing. The later versions had a built-in clip as standard, but it's too small and in moving it, you have to press on the touch screen which can cancel your music!
