Excellent heavywieghts.
These appear almost identical with Xarus 5000 loudspeakers offered by Hughes, but only have one set of terminals, so they are not usable with electronic crossovers. Bass is superb; they sound as good as any 12' drivers I have tried, and the ABRs do not 'wuffle'. Mid-range and top end are fine. Some pundits describe the sound as unrefined; i DISAGREE (but add a graphic EQ and you can make most speakers sound like studio monitors)
Sensitivity is great; They are rated at 200 WPC (Xarus 5000s are rated at 250 watts; I think the drivers may be identical) ... they can produce very high sound levels. They comfortable reproduce sounds down to 20 Hz; this means that in most stereo setups a subwoofer would be unnecessary. In a home theatre like mine, with a 7.1 ch 165 WPC amplifier, roll off your subs at 20-25 Hz and they won't rattle so much. Put on Saving Private Ryan and you'll duck!
Why buy these instead of something smaller? First, they really are a waste of real estate for anyone in a flat or with an 'average' amplifier; something smaller (like the Diamond bookshelf loudspeakers either side of the 40" TV in my living room) will sound pretty good ... until you put on a certain CD by Prodigy and hear two seconds of complete silence after hearing the phrase "Give me a little bass". Play the same CD through your Valdus 500s and you might hear silence once again ... but you WILL feel something!
