    Good with a small glitch

Does an excellent job of detection. Battery is new so hard to determine what it will be like long term. Typically with a full battery and four or five hours of driving it loses 25-50%. My only minor complaint is the accuracy and consistency of the compass function. It always seems to be off 10- 20 degrees and appears to be needing re-calibrated far too often. As far as detection goes, I can say it works very well on Ka band for sure, does a good job of filtering unwanted signals. Have not had it detect laser yet. Have three of these including in my Vette and Maserati (targets for enforcement) and it has alerted every time.

Not satisfied at all with this crap detector!

I bought this radar detector as a replacement for an el cheapo that someone had given me. It still works, but I bought into the Whistler name brand. BIG MISTAKE!!! Just came from a long, around the country trip with my family and this device didn't detect police vehicles until I was almost right up on them. Construction zones where my old detector would alert were quiet with this unit. It constantly powered off with a loud, jarring sound preceding the event. It pinged on the most random events ever where no police were nearby. The compass recalibrated itself and refused to give the correct heading. I'll be using my el cheapo in the future as it's more reliable. Ugh. I really want a freaking refund.

  • 2nd Team

It was the only battery operated radar detector in town. I like battery operated radar detectors and no one makes these anymore because of diminishing range issues when batteries run down. The XRT-540 isn't a Solo 2, 3 or 4 because it's top located controls are more cumbersome to turn on, mute, and the unit itself more difficult to remove from the windshield bracket. This unit hasn't really been battlefield tested as all it's alerts were obvious radar positions. On the other hand it uses rechargeable batteries, it's inexpensive and available for now.

  • Motorcycle application

Unit is bigger and heavier than I expected. The suction cup mount didn't perform well when attached to my Harley's windshield as the weight of detector caused it to bounce about. I ended up putting it on top of my front brake resivoir with a large thick rubber band to hold it in place. It works well for my 25 minute commute and I've had no problems with it's Auto shut off or short battery life. The one issue I have is the 2 blue lights that flash to alert you. They're to small and blue is an ineffective color choice to get your attention. Keep in mind I'm on a Harley so audiable alert tones don't help. In the daytime I never see the small lights go off. I have to keep an eye on the unit just like mirrors, speedometer, gauges, traffic and everything else. It's not a bad detector and for a car I'm sure it's fine, but for a motorcycle I doubt I'd buy it again.

  • Decent

Ok for the price, consider other name brand models for $40 or under as well. This one has an edge over the others because of its ability to go cordless.

  • Dissapointing compared to quality detectors

Not very desirable coming from a previous Beltronics owner. So many false alerts on the important KA band that I wonder if the cops switched to all invisible vehicles or this thing doesn't have a clue. I have not seen one legit threat in dozens of alerts. The detector also freaks out after about an hour of continuous use and starts flashing "shut off". I only got this to give budget radar detectors another try and I needed the compass feature which appears to work fine after calibration. Will be investing in a new quality detector soon.

  • Great for the price

works pretty well. I've noticed it gives off false readings when i pass Wallgreen and CVS stores (probably because of the revolving doors) but it alerted me to a speed camera which I thought was different and amazing. It also saved my ass from a speeding ticket in just 2 days of having it in. Buttons are hard to figure out what they actually do so DO NOT throw away those directions thinking youll be fine without them.

  • Disappointment

Out of the box hard to program. Plenty of opportunity to test it. Did not go off with four episodes of state troopers in the median of the expressway, twice with sheriff deputies in the median. I did get a radar signal of 1 when a state trooper was following directly behind me for about 2 miles. I have had about two dozen other police encounters and it did not go off at all. The display is also extremely difficult to read. Battery life is about six hours. When tested against the radar detector it was supposed to replace Side by side, my 10-year-old Uniden beat it hands down for reliability. If your license or insurance premium depends on this unit, either walk to the DMV or work overtime to pay the additional premium!

  • Junk

This thing is useless. It was either bad from the factory or it's too old to work with today's Ka-band. It falses every couple of minutes and has never gone off in the presence of a police cruiser in my local area. I have two Escort models that work perfectly and I've been successfully using radar detectors for 30+ years. This Whistler does not work.

  • Cordless with the cord! SMH

This devise is not really a cordless device. The battery last about 45 minutes and it takes like 2 hrs to recharge. It defeat the purpose of having a cordless scanner. If you replace the batteries with Alkaline it will last like 4 to 5 hrs ( but again) you would be spending money on batteries. The volume is not as simple to manipulate. The display is hard to read unless is actually going off. If you want to swap batteries often, you will get frustrated because both of the battery contact inside the unit are springs "positive and negative" (never seen before) so they will bend down on the positive end of the battery causing your battery to stick out a bit making it hard to close the lid. Overall the unit works but keep all this things in mind. Basically you get what you pay for.
