PS
I have notified Kilner of my dissatisfaction and they sent me a replacement wooden lid very promptly.
Invited them to view this review, made suggestions to improve by changing the lid to glass and a range of sizes.
Can hope for improvements to be in the pipeline judging by the response of Kilners representative.
Hart's of Stur ( Best price!) were quite ready to help, but not needed...
Original Review
Its quite big and many people would not need or want to ferment this much at a time.
It took about 4kg of white cabbage plus a grated carrot. That's a lot of, unless you're a big family.
A smaller version started at intervals would be more versatile.
The big problem I've encountered is the lid has warped after too much fluid was released magically...and the lid got soaked. Now, it does not seal securely, and I will be complaining to Kilner.
I fear it will get worse or even split, in time.
Kilner should have the whit and wherewithal to make a glass lid
Another design defect is that the conical vented rubber bung is not a good fit in the lid, its very difficult to get it tight because the bung and the aperture don't match.
Of course, if they match perfectly, its going to be nigh on impossible to extract the bung, but the designers have erred on the side of being too loose.
Back to the drawing board, Kilner!
Useful for fermenting veggies. I like these bc there’s lot of space. No worries about overcrowding. See through to know ferments are doing its job properly.
