Additional InformationThe second effort by Brazilian master Glauber Rocha, ENTRANCED EARTH is a thought-provoking and unsettling political psychodrama. Conceived as the second chapter of a trilogy on the difficult and tricky political situation of sixties' Brazil, the film is set in the fictitious town of Eldorado and centres on the tribulations of dying poet and journalist Paulo Martins. The thoughts that run through the moribund intellectualÆs mind are a symbolic reflection upon the two different sides of power, left and right, amidst which lies the misery of men, dominated by greed and moral poverty. One of the most prominent figures of the Cinema Novo current, Rocha doesnÆt spare criticism for any one, from political leaders to intellectual elites to artists, the latter especially, are vigorously called to take sides and not to entrench themselves in a barren isolation from reality. Shot in haunting black and white, ENTRANCED EARTH reflects the climate of formal experimentation that distinguished Brazilian filmmaking of the late sixties, adopting a storytelling technique that is based mainly on the evocative power of cutting and editing, rather than on linear narration.
