Richard Attenborough's directorial debut OH! WHAT A LOVELY WAR is a riotous, thought-provoking satire on the follies of war, based on the stage musical of the same name. Set during World War I, the story revolves around the Smith family, whose five sons enlist in the army only to end up as cannon fodder. Told through the words and music of soldiers' marching songs, the harsh reality of war is offset by a distinctly irreverent British humour. And who said war had to be depressing?

    Great film, and still stirs the emotions.

    If you like Brighton and dislike war, this is for you. It should be shown on every Armistice Day (and probably will be on some TV channel) but the DVD has extra features well worth seeing. A tad over-long in parts (as I think director Richard Attenborough said, later on) but it's a wonderful film.

    One of the most entertaining anti war films, with quite a few light hearted songs that suddenly turn to the horrors of the war and give you that kicked in the stomach feeling. It also highlights the differences in the attitudes and experiences of the class system that existed at the time. This is a great film to teach history from.
