Reviews4 stars out of 5 -- “The title of the opener, ‘Strangely Strange But Oddly Normal’ explains some of their everlasting charm and deserved cult status, for this album is a rich and rewarding mix of both.”
Any fan of something like Stuart Maconie's Freak Zone on BBC 6 will enjoy this. Ball park it's in Incredible String Band territory, and is of the same vintage. Listening back to a lot of stuff form x number of years ago can disappoint, with only nostalgia saving it. No so with this album, it still stands up very well indeed, and deserves its place as something of a classic album from the period. Lyrically and musically it has a weirdly contemporary feel to it. This is probably down to a vogue for all things folk inflected from Trembling Bells to Devendra Banhart, If you haven't heard this album and like the area of music I've just mentioned I recommend you check this out immediately - it won't disappoint.
Blissed out and achingly English (well, Anglo/ Irish) slice of hippy fuelled whimsy. I love the singular arrangements and crazed harmonies; it's like stumbling across a lost tribe and giving them arcane instruments to interpret their inner souls. Brilliant. Thank the Lord for Marc Riley @6Music where I first heard the fantastic album track "Strangely Strange, Yet Oddly Normal".
Often mentioned in the same sentence as the Incredible String Band, Dr. Strangely Strange are far more out there - in a thoroughly enjoyable way of course. They seemed to be really enjoying themselves while recording and you will share their enjoyment too. Vaguely folky, vaguely vaudeville, vaguely soft rock, the Strangelys have it all. If you do like ISB and other eccentric bands like Principle Edward's Magic Theatre - even Amazing Blondel - you should give this fine album shelf room.
