About this product

Product Information

Huge swathes of people spend their days performing tasks they secretly believe are not really necessary. This book shows why, and what we can do about it Back in 1930, the economist John Maynard Keynes prophesied that by the century's end, technology would see us all working fifteen-hour weeks. But instead, something curious happened. Today, average working hours have not decreased, but increased. And now, across the developed world, three-quarters of all jobs are in services or admin, jobs that don't seem to add anything to society- bullshit jobs. In Bullshit Jobs, David Graeber explores how this phenomenon - one more associated with the 20th-century Soviet Union, but which capitalism was supposed to eliminate - has happened. In doing so, he looks at how we value work, and how, rather than being productive, work has become an end in itself; the way such work maintains the current broken system of finance capital; and, finally, how we can get out of it.

  • Indispensible.

This book articulates just about everything that frustrated and disturbed me about employment in the NHS with its myriad bullshit posts. And the author makes it quite clear that bullshit jobs extend way beyond the public services. In a nutshell, he explains why, for largely political reasons, useful work is scarcely valued whilst the importance of pointless work (self generating admin in particular) is grossly inflated. This is indispensible reading. It cuts through the mumbo jumbo and assures us that it is possible to escape the quicksand enveloping capitalism’s rotting corpse.

  • Perhaps it Might have been Called "Less than Useless Jobs".

Full employment has become the tail that wags the dog. We have made it so important that many jobs now exist which provide no function for Britain, apart from keeping us from a an average shorter working week. Such jobs do not increase productivity. One might argue that they exist for purely political ends, that is keeping the middle classes so busy that they can not consider their lot.

  • Book was interesting, a little low on content

The book's content was more or less as expected, did not have very much more content than the Medium article it grew out of though.

  • Read it and reconsider your professional life

A thoughtful (and controversial) look into the mechanics of the modern economy, and your place in it as a worker. Read the original article in STRIKE! magazine for a quick summary.
