Very reliable, but fiddly to get it to play with Sky/NowTV

My initial review (below) was written when I was beating my brains out getting it set up. I had to do A LOT of detailed behind the scenes fiddling to get it to use my Sky/NowTV internet - this is not for the faint hearted. I learned a lot about the Raspberry Pi (on which the Unifi controller system runs) JSON files, SSH, Linux etc etc, which was interesting but time consuming. Now that it is set up it has worked flawlessly for about 2 years, so I am very happy with it. Previously.... My 7 WAPs are Ubiquiti. The Unifi controller makes setting these up really easy and they have been rock solid for a couple of years. My BT HH5a running OpenWRT and has also been rock solid with Sky/NowTV, but can't talk to the Unifi controller. The USG can be controlled by the controller and I think has higher grade protection against cyberattacks, so I thought the USG would be an upgrade. I wanted this to be excellent but haven't managed to get it the way I need it despite hours of fiddling. 1) It can't talk directly to Sky VDSL so needs a separate modem. No problem, I had a BT Openreach modem in the cupboard that was really easy to unlock into bridge mode. But it was really complicated to get the USG talking to Sky, and to get it to remember how to do it for the future. MANY hours, many tries and much fiddling later internet connection was established. This must be an issue that many people have. Why isn't it a standard option on the USG? 2) Getting the USG to sit well in the network replacing the HH5a I expected to be easy, but the network became unstable. I still haven't sorted this out and have reverted to the HH5a till I feel like losing another week of my life.

    Would be great if...

You could actually get the thing to work, I have spent days with Ubiquity support trying to get this USG to adopt into the Unifi software, even support have given up now. I don't think there is anything wrong with the unit, it's just that Ubiquity has made it so darn difficult to set up. Apparently they are building some software that will make the process much easier, when that happens I will try again. It currently is sitting unused in a draw at work. Shame.

  • Great device, fiddly config.

This is a great little router. Specifically bought to provide two separate internet connections/failover switching between FTTP and EDGE. Still requires reliable modems for either connection type to be connected. The configuration can be very straight forward, but is very easy to mess up and requires an account on the Ubuqiti system. Be prepared to fiddle around until you find your way. This is not a device for a novice.

  • Excellent kit

Configured it with a Ubiquiti POE Switch, Cloud Key, three UAP-AC-LR and four VLAN. Worked like a dream. I used it as a Gateway Router on FTTC Broadband with a Hawawi ADSL modem upstream. Very manageable, great debugging and graphical stats via with web interface. Ideal for a medium office or home use.

  • Very average, but acceptable if you're commited to Ubiquiti

If you like a pretty UI and are commited to the Ubiquiti products then the USG makes sense. But compared to PFSesne, OPNSense and Draytek products then this USG is horribly underpowered and inflexible. There are far superior routers out there, but like I said if you want this then you'll already have value for it.

  • Excellent ISP router replacement.

Excellent. Huge step up from ISPs router. Although you do need a modem and AP to go with it.Excell
