About this product

Product Information

BABYLON is the quintessential British reggae film from 1980, centring on sound system 'toaster' Blue (Brinsley Forde) and his crew, Ital Lion, as they ready themselves for a face off with rival group Jah Shaka. As the event approaches, Blue's personal life becomes plagued with difficulty when he is fired from his job and begins to suspect his girlfriend of cheating on him. However, the worst is yet to come when Blue is savagely beaten by the police and his Ital Lion brethren discover that their equipment has been destroyed. Broken and succumbing to the belief that recent events are an indication of society's rejection of his race, Blue decides to fight back...

  • More social reality in 1980 than a showcase for reggae music

The significance of this film is the time it was made - 1980 and just before the Brixton and other riots. It shows the daily harassment of blacks was never far away. If you are looking for a lot of reggae being played you will be disappointed even though the story is about a forthcoming 'soundclash' between two rival sound systems. The film is more about life for young second generation West Indian youths with the lack of employment, the racism and poverty. It is a bit bleak but rings true. So, not a celebration of reggae music, much more social reality. Seemingly hard to get now, only this one on e-bay when I bought it secondhand!

  • Babylon the DVD

The film was based around sound systems racism and roaming the streets. There didn't seem to be much of a story line or any twists or turns and at times found it confusing what was going on.

  • Dated

Watchable film in my opinion. I remember this screened on BBC Four about 10 years ago, which at the time i only heard of the movie. Yes it is dated, but still relevant to today. Unemployment, racism, sexism, immigration and poor police relations with the black community. Long overdue dvd release though.
