    Spring compressors

These are strong, well made and well finished (certainly excellent value for the price), and can be driven with a 1/2" square drive adaptor or a 21/32" (IIRC) spanner or socket (if there were clearance) I used them on a set of 1999 Polo front springs, and, while they did the job, I encountered two issues. 1) The coil hooks wouldn't both engage on the coils, obliging me to engage just one of each end's hooks, which wasn't much of a problem, really, but they might suit coil springs bigger than the Polo's. 2) The hexagons on the screws fouled on the spring coils and removed the powder coating from the spring at that point. In my case I was repairing a 16 year old car, so the springs are unlikely to rust out in the remainder of its lifetime., even with the damaged coating. If I have to use them again, I'll heat up and bend the spring hooks a bit, and perhaps have the hexagons turned round. I couldn't use a socket on them, anyway. As it was, I performed a job on the Polo for under £90, in two hours, that would have cost £300 at the garage. (parts and tool included in the £90) Well worth buying, even with the shortcomings I mentioned.

  • Most critical review

bit long for my needs but used a bit of pipe to reduce the space and not all the hooks connect with the springs

  • Does what it says

Firstly I found 1 nut to be 21mm and the other just under 22mm so was changing spanners. I then filed the one down to 21mm (no big deal but that's why I gave them 4*), after that everything was fine.Once you get used to them they do exactly what you want.Changed all the coil springs on Mk3 Golf.I found that if you tighten 1 side too much the other clamp tends to slip towards the other, once you realize this & do them fairly equal, perfect.

  • Spring has sprung

I needed to change the top mounts on my honda, which entiailed clamping the springs. These clamps did the job and whilst i was nervous about them slipping, my nerves were unfounded. The nice feature of having a 1/2 drive fitting made easy work. Id recommend them if you need a quick diy solution.

  • Bought for rear springs

A good pair of compression clamps for the money and I had to cut screws down to suit my rear coil springs but easily done.. one thing is to take the split washer off as this Jams up under pressure..

  • buy with confidence

just as I needed a quality pair of clamps longer than normal so a big help connecting to next turn of spring.

  • Strong and easy to use

Obviously only suitable for springs that have enough clearance on the outside above and below to allow for the actual threaded rods. May not engage both claws on tighter diameter springs although one claw on each clamp may be adequate in many cases. Probably better suited for McPherson strut type springs or similar and not for short springs that are enclosed top and bottom. Overall a good quality tool for the price.

  • Good strong tools that do the job. What more do you want?

Sturdy and allowed me to change both springs on the front of the car (both compressing the old ones and the new ones. They took quite a beating as I tried to get it back on the car, but performed well. I certainly can recommend them!
