  • Acceptable but not like the old NIkons

My second Nikon 4000ED motherboard worked one day and didn't the next so i decided not to try to invest in another, and instead to purchase something more modern. This got decent reviews on various sites and was a reasonable investment for the final year of cleanup from 5 years of film scanning. It's light weight, slower than the Nikon and comes with software which I could use, but haven't tried because I've used VueScan for the rest of the project. VueScan requires that the software be installed, so it has to be whether I wish it clogging up the hard drive or not. Installation onto the Mac running Sierra was routine and then scanning was routine. A few warnings: the carrier in the machine for slides seems to have slightly less spring pressure on one end than the other, so the scans are ever so slightly not rectangular. Vertical edges are parallel but horizontal edges are not. VueScan is apparently not able to set up Auto-Preview for this machine so you have to click on the button to begin the preview of each scan. I can't speak to the film auto feed, as I am inserting each negative into a slide mount for scanning. The Digital ICE effect cannot be seen until after the scan is saved - it does not show during the preview. Finally, repeated scans produce some interesting effects as for some reason the machine moves the slide around during the scan. 3600dpi is the maximum scan size.
