Mid class 3 blade planer with pro results, tough and heavy, but fabulous finishes

For being as compact as it is, it is heavy .- 92 lbs. Staggeringly smooth cuts. 3 blades and two speeds can't be beat. I had one before and sold it when I moved. Dummy me! Here I am buying another one a month later. I bought the exact same unit only new. Haven't fired it up yet (waiting for my Alaska chainsaw mill cut Alder to cure enough first). Looked at the market available in planers, and nothing compares to this unit for less than double the price. Spend the extra hundred bucks and get the 735, it's very worth it for the difference. Even a Harbor Freight 2 blade planer is $329 on sale so this one becomes a steal with over twice the cuts per inch and predominately excellent reviews. The planer is built like a brick outhouse! 4 widely spaced posts and adjustable feed beds, Blades are easy change and it has storage pockets in the case for blade changing tools etc. Blades are two sided so with the spare set of blades that came with it I have 4 blade changes included. You'll need ear protection cause this beast is rather loud when planing, but then again all planers are noisy. The dust collection port works pretty good, but you will need at the minimum a 2-1/2" hose size from a big shop vac. I use a 4" dust collector and it is pretty efficient. I only had a couple plug ups in around 50 hours of milling. Very positive feed mechanism, dependable as can be. The only reason I will consider changing is to go bigger if needed. I used my last one HARD! I was milling 4x12x20' timbers and the only complaint I ever received was that they wanted a rougher finish, it was too smooth a finish. My last one paid for itself and I still sold it for 75% of new price. This model holds its value if you ever need to sell later, so I suggest you buy new and spend the extra hundred bucks or so...

    Planer sold with dull blades

Product arrived in a boxed container with all entities enclosed. However, the first use of the planer was showing burnt blade marks. The planer blades were not sharp, and would stall the machine. I am not impressed with this type of quality control on 3 major parts (sharp knives).

  • Smooth as glass, fairly easy to set up and use for this amateur furniture maker

So far I've used the 735x on Douglas Fir and Hard Maple. I'm impressed by the glass-like smooth surface it produces. I built a custom stand for it before it arrived and bolted it down. My planer now resides under my workbench and I roll it out when I need it. A future upgrade will be a five or six foot long sled that I know is perfectly flat to enable me to plane flat longer uneven boards. I have a glue gun, and I like the suggestion of using wedges and the glue gun to keep the workpiece in place on the sled. I've noticed a minor amount of snipe, but I reduced this by continuously feeding the machine with multiple boards of the same type. This way the rollers really only settle at the end of the planing session. I'm making furniture for personal/family use, this planer is the kind of shop upgrade I needed.

  • Professional Grade for the home owner.

I purchased the "X" version as I read on reviews the standard version doesn't have blades and you have to buy they separately. Wrong. The DX735 came with blades and the "X" version comes with an extra set. Also read on-line the blades are one sided. Wrong. They're reversible. Regardless, I got it for a very good price and have already run about about 100 board feet through it. It's fantastic. The feed tables are slightly tilted down going in and up coming out which limits snipe. Zero snipe so far. I actually bought an 8 foot x 12 inch piece of melamine board to mount through the planer and feed the wood across it to prevent snipe, but the tables work great on the 6 foot pieces I'm running. Shop vac can't keep up so I got a 4" dust collector hose from Harbor Freight. It fit snug on the power output, and I heavy duty rubber banded a pillow cover to the other end to collect the massive amount of sawdust. Worked great but you'll have to empty it about every 60 board feet of 8" width. Love this machine!

  • Best Portable Thickness Planer I've Ever Used!

As a professional woodworker, I've used many different brands of portable thickness planers, and I can say with a very high degree of confidence that this DeWalt DW-735X is by far the best-of-the-best! (The "X" in the model number just indicates that the DW-735 comes with the "Xtra" infeed and outfeed tables and "Xtra" set of knives!) With its 3-knife cutterhead and 10,000 RPM cutterhead speed (which is effectively 30,000 cuts-per-minute!), the results you get from this planer rivals that of many large, stationary planers. I've used this with dozens of varieties of wood, from pine to poplar to walnut to numerous exotic species, and the finished cut is smooth every time with very little to no sanding required. This is a very heavy (nearly 100-pounds including the two extension tables) and well-built machine. The cutterhead knives are reversible, a snap to replace, and require no time-consuming setup. The two-speed gear box allows feed speeds of 96 CPI or 179 CPI to optimize cut quality for various wood species. Adjustments are easy, and the gauges and scales are accurate and easy-to-read. I've read a few older reviews indicating that it was very difficult to adjust the depth of cut on this machine, but DeWalt must have taken care of that issue because the unit I received can literally be adjusted with one finger. As others have stated, I also recommend plugging this baby into a dedicated 20-amp circuit as this machine draws some power and will most likely kick a 15-amp breaker, even under light loads. You should also consider purchasing a planer stand or mobile base for this planer. Although it is portable, it is nonetheless a heavy machine that is best used with a sturdy base. For long lumber, you might also want to purchase 1 or 2 adjustable roller supports to keep the board level during the cut to eliminate snipe. If you require (or prefer), you can even swap-out the OEM cutterhead on this machine with an individually purchased 3rd-party spiral cutterhead. Made specifically for this planer by Byrd Tools, the SHELIX Cutterhead (also available on Amazon) provides a "shear" rather than a "straight" cut for a more superior finish and quieter operation. Overall, I could not be more pleased with the quality of the DeWalt DW-735(X). Over the years, I've learned that no tool is ever "perfect" for every woodworker, but this thickness planer ticks more of the boxes than any other in its class. A highly-recommended machine.

  • Fantastic planer

After long and hard research I finally had the guts (and budget) to buy the Dewalt DW735X planer. What a machine!! Used to build a new table for my wife and now planning for more projects. The finish is so good that I barely sanded with 220 grit prior to stain & varnish. Super recommended brand for DYI'er. Having the additional blades and side guides is crucial. At the end of some 40 boards the blades got chipped in 2 places, nothing major, but for the perfectionist in me having the 2and pair of blades at hand is a great comfort.

  • Very well made and easy to use. Planned old reclaimed wood to make a dining table with ease. Blades lasted through the planning process.

So glad I purchased this Dewalt product. My other planer, only 3 yrs old, developed a problem causing me to look at a better name brand this time. Seems I chose the best when buying Dewalt.

  • Great planer but a real power hog.

Like many others have said this needs a dedicated 20 amp circuit. Either that or have nothing else running, not even light bulbs, or it will trip a breaker. The duller the blades get the more amperage it will draw. Obviously planing oak and Ash will dull the blades very quickly. I would highly recommend buying some carbide aftermarket blades.

  • Wow just a great planer

Listen I had a 734 Dewalt for years thought it was the best ,but this one is great, the power blower is great, just run it to a bag and watch it fill up, the 2 speeds, are also a plus, with the faster speed I am doing less sanding, and did I mention it's is also a lot guietier, should have gone with this one the first time

  • Great thickness planer kit for under $500

Works very well and is setup to use. Thickness gauge required a slight adjustment to be correct. In and out feed tables required height adjustments/leveling to planer bed. Still can cause some gauge out on the ends, most of my boards it didn't happen to but some did. seems like it needs one more roller on each side of the cutter roller and it would eliminate it 99.9% of the time. My old Craftsman shop vac was able to keep up with discharge. just had to empty it after running all 12 boards through a couple passes.
