Additional InformationBased on a series of books by Patrick O'Brian, and directed by Peter Weir, MASTER AND COMMANDER plunges viewers deep into the story of a British Navy ship at sea during the Napoleonic war. Russell Crowe stars as Aubrey, the charismatic captain who wrestles with issues like honour, pride, duty, sacrifice and loyalty while using ingenious tactics to engage his prey--a much larger and better-equipped French Man o' War. Paul Bettany plays his friend, the ship's doctor, who cautions Aubrey about letting revenge cloud his judgement after the French Man o' War almost sinks them in an early battle. Before the incredibly intense final skirmish the men battle a raging storm, launch an excursion to the Galapagos Islands, find time for grog-enhanced merriment, and endure some primitive surgery. Weir fills the film with a rich wealth of period detail, convincing dialogue and the same haunting, dreamlike mood that has informed his best films, like PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK, THE LAST WAVE and THE TRUMAN SHOW. The wealth of sounds and sights on display are so evocative one can practically smell the salt air and feel the heave of the ocean beneath their seats. Russell is intense and inspiring as Aubrey and Bettany proves a worthy match. MASTER AND COMMANDER is another triumph for Weir, and further evidence of his ability to fuse poetic realism with rousing entertainment.

  • Made to test the capabilities of Surround Sound

This film was made to fully utilize the possibilities of 5.1 surround sound. Unlike most films, where the surround sound is almost an afterthought, Master and Commander Far Side of the World is as much an audible as a visual extravaganza! They spent almost as much on perfecting the 'sound immersion' as on the fabulous filming. You hear what's going on on the deck above your head as other activities play out around you. Especially during the action scenes, it's worth playing through twice: once with your eyes open, then replay with your eyes closed, to fully appreciate how well crafted are the three-dimensional sound effects of this film. I highly recommend it.

  • Superb and historical adventurous yarn

Aubrey Maturin transferred beautifully to the wide screen. Jack is probably not as rotund as he's supposed to be, but the characters are superb. The books from which this movie is made are absolutely the best seafaring novels ever, and this movie captures the hardships, adventure and excitement of them. I wonder if any more will ensue, as there is a wealth of really good material in the books. The landscapes are breathtaking and the sound superb. The entire cast are a delight, and could easily have done a "Hornblower" in terms of a series, although no doubt at horrendous cost. Totally recommended.
