Cracked Actor - and now the DVD???
I can't be the only one who had doubts about buying the new Cracked Actor CD - it's just David Live all over again, right? No! This package is as much of a leap forward as the 2005 remix was from the original. The track list is much the same, except in the following respects. The restored introduction, complete with Diamond Dog howls sets the scene brilliantly. It's Gonna Be Me replaces Here Today, Gone Tomorrow. The studio version of Future Legend now leads into Diamonds Dogs. Panic In Detroit gives way to an encore of John I'm Only Dancing, a nod to the then impending greatest metamorphosis in rock history, at least since Sgt Pepper. Width of A Circle is an unfortunate casualty. The entirety is tighter, much more together than the David Live recordings of seven or eight weeks previously. There are key changes in the band personnel and the addition of backing singers is also a sign of things to come. Mike Garson, more than ever, is the glue which holds it all together. There is much less spare, wailing saxophone over the introduction to an excellent rendering of Space Oddity. The burning question now is, is someone sitting on a film version of this gig? Was the whole thing filmed or just the bits the BBC wanted for the Cracked Actor documentary? I remember as a 17 year old avidly reading NME for updates on what David was up to in the States. We never saw this show in the UK and forty-three years later, I think it's high time.
