Good Product but is it worth the money?
So I like many of us rushed out to purchase this console because it's the last run of a limited release and sold out within 2 days even though there was a one console per person limit. What I can say is that is a good product off the bat however is it worth the money that it goes for?
This console offers something that no other version of the Nintendo entertainment system offers.
It can play your NES games upscaled to 1080p with various filters in both NTSC and PAL modes.
It can also connect to your analogue TV.
It boasts reference quality compatibility in numerous reviews and gets a lot of praise.
So if you are looking for an NES console that plays on your modern TV you can stop reading here because it does that.
But read on if you want to know about some obscure kind of problems that I faced
Now for my case I guess I had a special use case I wanted to use my Famicom Everdrive N8 cartridge on the console in Pal mode
Specifically so that I could pack away my old consoles as I currently have 2 consoles one to play NTSC games which is good because most games came out in NTSC regions.
But for me I wanted to play games in the PAL format because that's what I'm used to and particularly a game called Turrican which plays a little too fast in NTSC mode.
Pal games running on an NTSC console would run too fast if optimised for PAL and vice versa now the NT Mini is a console that can play both however it comes with caveats.
the Famicom N8 In Pal mode the menu system runs slugglishly in comparison to real hardware which may not be a big deal for you but I really disliked it when it runs perfectly on a
real PAL NES.
The Everdrive N8 NES version also has slow menus on the NT Mini.
I did hear that they made some improvements with regards to menus with the Everdrive N8 Pro but I didn't want to spend more considering that my original consoles don't have this issue
The biggest problem for me was Turrican didn't work at all it had nails all over the screen as a graphical glitch which made it unplayable in that specific use case scenario.
I contacted support and they told me that it is a known issue so I asked for an ETA for a fix to the problem and they told me they don't know.
This may or may not be a big deal for you however as it does work in NTSC and PAL mode and if you use an Everdrive N8 NES version through the NES slot.
However this brings me to the other problem why I wanted to use the Famicom version in the first place the NES slot on the NT Mini is rather loose but the Famicom slot is not.
Now I used an analog video signal I purchased the RGB cable from Retro Gaming Cables now if you want RGB video it works as advertised.
But I also did test Composite using a cheap VGA to TV RCA S-Video Adapter Converter which worked fine if a little worse than the original consoles.
See my point is only that for some the ability to hook up their console to the modern TV makes the console more than worth the price of entry.
However I am a gamer that plays on a CRT where the experience arguably better I wanted to replace my Japanese Top Loader and PAL NES with the NT Mini.
The convenience for me would have made it worth the money however since you do pay a premium for the console and when some features are not working as advertised albeit obscure features then for me it wasn't worth the money for me real hardware beats out this FPGA solution.
I guess PAL + Famicom Everdrive N8 + Turrican mode is not a high priority as most gamers will prefer to play their NES games in NTSC mode
In conclusion I can say for me it wasn't worth the price of entry for the amount of money you pay for it it should be perfect but as it happens it is good product but it's still a clone console so compatibility is not perfect and may never be depending on if they release a firmware update that addresses these issues or they may even release a new hardware revision that fixes the issue instead who knows?
