314ce is a great "live" guitar

Ok, this Taylor plays like just about all of the other Taylors. The action is smooth and the playability and quality are very good as you might expect. This guitar is not going to sound like a decent Gibson for Martin. Its tone is clear and bell like, but not complex and woody. It is decent for finger picking, but it is a fight to get decent volume out of the high E & B strings. The volume on the heavier strings tends to be heard over that of the lighter strings when finger picked or strummed. Where this guitar really stands out, is playing live. I can reall thrash this guitar and not overdrive the top or feel like I am getting an overdriven acoustic guitar sound. This guitar is a great work horse on stage with a band. Not to mention it looks great. The ES2 system is good, but not great in my opinion. If you are looking for accurate acoustic sound in A acoustic pick up, you would be happier with a decent guitar like a Larivee that comes stock with the LR Baggs anthem stock from the factory. I bought this guitar to play live, I already have a big Dred that I play in the living room for four small settings. It does serve the purpose that I bought it for.

    Disappointing performance and quality

After over 20 years of reading all those wonderful Taylor advertisements in guitar magazines like the ones of soldiers coming home and finally buying the Taylor guitar of their dreams I was able to purchase a new Taylor 314ce. I had purchased other cheaper guitars in hopes of paying less for a Taylor-like guitar. I bought several Carvin Cobalt on the used market. They played great and sounded excellent. I bought a new Yamaha AC3M and A3R and was amazed at the tone, play-ability and Chinese workmanship. So I finally went for the Taylor 314ce after researching that Sapele was a little brighter than mahogany. The guitar arrived safely from Sweetwater and I allowed it to acclimate for 12 hours before unpacking. The action was OK with some buzzing. The tone was OK ... I actually preferred the warmer tones of Yamaha AC3M unplugged and plugged in. The Yamaha also had a builtin tuner and nice mic emulations. The Taylor had finish issues with dirt in the finish. The Carvins and Yamahas had perfect finishes. The Yamahas and Carvin all had perfect Spruce tops while the Taylor exhibited several dark grains. My past experience was that over time these darker grains will start as surface checking and eventually crack depending on how many outdoor gigs they see. The pickup system on Yamahas to my ear were more balanced and true than the Taylor's. I went for the 314ce as these was one of Lindsey Buckngham's stage and studio guitars per the Taylor site. However Lindsey's older version had a more versatile pickup system than the current 2018 version. Would the 414 have been a better choice? Our touring friend just dumped his in favor of a Martin guitar which he found had a fuller richer tone. The Taylor is a nice guitar overall however it was NOT what bucket-lists are made off.

  • Taylor 312ce

Really nice guitar. Plays great and pretty nice sound as well. Could use a little umph on the high strings but this is my first Taylor and a great guitar.

  • Screams To Be Played - BEGS to Be Played

This guitar is amazing. I'm just starting out, learning. I have a GS-MINI ES. I went through 5 sets of strings just to find a set that "works" ... This thing stays in tune like you wouldn't believe... and when it does need some tuning, it's pretty consistent through all of the strings. No problems at all, and the electronics on this thing are pretty darn awesome. The case it comes in is very sturdy ... a little heavy ... i.e., I think around 20 pounds with it in the case, and such ... but, the colors are nice, intonnation is really nice. I'm glad I opted for this one over a cheaper, less expensive guitar. I'm 5'1", and the size of this guitar is just perfect.... It has a great feel, and like I said, stays in tune very nicely, and is it fun to play? You bet'cha! Get one!
