Additional InformationThough she refuses Captain Wentworth (Rupert Penry-Jones) in her youth, Anne Elliot's (Sally Hawkins) love for her handsome but penniless suitor never dies. When he returns eight years later--a wealthy and high-ranking naval officer--she has the chance to set things right. While the two leads ably carry the film, the highlight is Anthony Head's (BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER) hilarious turn as Anne's snobby father. A splendid rendition of Jane Austen's final novel.

A well written and acted film version of the book

I enjoyed it for a different take on the story from previous films. The acting was excellent and the script writing helped to cut out the longer passages in the book and use extra conversations to tell the story. Rupert Penry-Jones was a dashing Wentworth but perhaps did not look so 'knocked about' as Ciaran Hinds. 8 years on board a sailing ship in all weathers would definitely have given him a rosier complexion! The scenes at Lyme were particularly well filmed. Sally Hawkins was perfect as Anne and the actor who played Sir Walter was deliciously snobbish.

  • Great story to start with

One of Jane Austen's best books and although and even tho' I own three of the film versions they are all perfect tho' different. The actors may not be the most famous but do a very good job of fulfilling their roles. At least, unlike some of the more modern versions of her books such as Northanger Abbey, there is no giving in to the loose morals of the modern generation, pandering to the oversexed desires that were never meant to be there when written.

  • Wonderful dramatisation!

Jane Austen's 'Persuasion' is a quieter, more mature story than (say) 'Pride and Prejudice' or 'Sense and Sensibility', but no less appealing and romantic. It is the tale of lost love that is found again, and the cast in this film could not be better. I owned the film in video format for years and, having worn out both the tape and my old video player(!), now have it on DVD. Definitely a 'keeper'!

  • Jane Austen at her best

Years after having been persuaded to refuse an offer of marriage, Anne Elliot is brought face to face with her suitor Captain Wentworth. He is now successful and looking to settle down, but with whom? Who loves longest - a man or a woman? Jane Austen as always explores the customs of her world.
