    Marks & Gran Bring the Forties to Life

    Has to be my #1 favourite series. Just brilliant in casting, acting and direction. The idea of 'time travel' is not new of course but it rings so true for many thousands of us who lived through those austere and often terrifying war years. Series 1 to 3 are the best. Sad that the cast changed for the last three series with Emma Amos replacing Michelle Holmes as Yvonne Sparrow and Elizabeth Carling taking over from Dervla Kirwan as Phoebe, the pub barmaid and later pub landlady. The replacements were very good and the acting remained top class but, like all cast changes, one is unhappy that the original cast had disappeared. Garry Sparrow (Nicholas Lyndhurst) is the *star* of the show but, for me, one of the other characters really stole the whole series: Constable Reg Deadman (Christopher Ettridge) was pure comic genius! Absolutely hilarious interpretation of the script character. Another top class performance came from Ron (Victor McGuire), the chap who ran a printing business and was a great pal of Garry Sparrow. The scripts were wonderful throughout. This DVD set also has some highly interesting "Extras" including interviews with Marks and Gran, Christopher Ettridge and others in the cast. Highly recommended DVD set and one of the best sitcoms ever.

    the characters make the story lines believable and that is a sign of very good actors its funny but with a touch of softness about it victor mcguire was funny when he fell off the ladders very engaging well done

    Excellent!

    I couldn't remember seeing this series first time around but having recently seen a couple of episodes on TV, I wanted more so ordered the whole series from ebay. I loved it! I love the idea of time travel and really enjoyed the whole thing. It really doesn't matter that two of the main characters were played by different actresses from series 4 because the storyline is so entertaining. I've seen reviews where Elizabeth Carling and Emma Amos have been criticised as not being as good actresses as Dervla Kirwan and Michelle Holmes but that is nonsense, in my opinion. Elizabeth and Emma are every bit as good. In fact, Emma's performance in one episode brought me to tears (but I won't spoil it by revealing which one!) And I did prefer Elizabeth's portrayal of Phoebe to that of Dervla. Nicholas Lyndhurst is, of course, excellent, as are Victor McGuire and Christopher Ettridge. If you haven't seen this, I do encourage you to try it. I love it!

    Gifted to a 40 year old with special needs.

    At his request we gifted this to a 40year old with special needs for Christmas. He is delighted to have this boxset, rating 'Goodnight Sweetheart' just a few pegs below 'Only Fools and Horses' for humour. Currently though, he says GS wins because he has seen OF&H so often...and he added that he also enjoys imagining how his grandparents must have lived during the war era.

    Compulsive viewing

    The ‘time travel’ concept of this series is well executed and as a comedy it it stands the test of ‘time’, even if some of the jokes are of a particular era and require knowledge of that period to be most effective. A good watch. Compulsive viewIng.
