ReviewsVariety - A magnificent film. George Lucas set out to make the biggest possible adventure fantasy out of his memories of serials and older action epics, and he succeeded brilliantly., Time Out - Has distinct limitations, but the current return to a cinema of spectacle and wonder is wholly encouraging., Time Magazine - A grand and glorious film that may well be the smash hit of 1977, and certainly is the best movie of the year so far., New Yorker - George Lucas, who made American Graffiti, has put together a sci-fi film that draws on any number of associations. STAR WARS is both amazing and familiar.
Additional InformationLuke Skywalker (Mark Hamill)--an impulsive but good hearted young man who lives on the dusty planet of Tatooine with his aunt and uncle--longs for the exciting life of a Rebel soldier. The rebels are fighting against the evil Empire, which has set about destroying planets inhabited by innocent citizens with the Death Star, a fearsome planet-like craft commanded by Grand Moff Tarkin (Peter Cushing) and the eternally frightful Darth Vader (David Prowse, with the voice of James Earl Jones). When Luke's aunt and uncle are murdered by the Empire's imperial stormtroopers and he mysteriously finds a distress message from Princess Leia in one of his androids, R2-D2 (Kenny Baker), he must set out to find Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness), a mysterious old hermit with incredible powers. On his journey, Luke is aided by the roguish, sarcastic mercenary Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and his towering furry sidekick Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew) as they run into a host of perilous situations while trying to rescue the princess--and the entire galaxy. STAR WARS--George Lucas' stunning sci-fi masterpieceùis an extremely inventive and entertaining film that garnered generations of loyal fans who are forever imprinted with the memory of its characters and dialogue. Magnificently referencing everything from Akira Kurosawa's SEVEN SAMURAI and THE HIDDEN FORTRESS to THE WIZARD OF OZ to John Ford Westerns and Joseph Campbell philosophies, STAR WARS revolutionised the cinematic world with its epic storytelling and amazing special effects. In addition to film veterans Guinness and Cushing, the movie also features an unforgettable performance from the young Ford, who would go on to become one of the biggest stars of the silver screen. Includes the original theatrical version of the film.

  • Original theatrical versions

Well, I never bothered to buy these when they first came out due to all the bad reviews. Yes, the GOUT as they are referred to by fans, could, and should, have been presented in proper widescreen, and restored much like the SE versions only without all the silly added CGI. But do you know what, buying them used years later, watching on a large widescreen, set to fill out the pillar box that remained from the laserdisc mater and transfer, and they are more than acceptable. In fact, they instantly brought me back to watching them when broadcast on terrestrial television growing up. Nostalgia filled my heart and I soon forgot the picture quality, in fact they are no worse than the broadcast quality from ITV that I remember as a lad. I personally now, wouldn’t change them if I could. They aren’t perfect, but neither was our old wooden box Panasonic tube tv 📺 back in the day!

  • A Classic

Wanted to see Harrison Ford as a young man again, so handsome. The film hasn’t aged very well due to advances in film technology, but still, very definitely worth a watch. Great fun, and entertaining. Will watch again. A classic.

Great family film. This set has original and remastered version with better explosions etc. My 8 year old daughter really enjoyed it as her first 'real' Star Wars film after watching Lego Star Wars.

  • Seems as if dark shadow over video!

The film is excellent but the colouring seemed dark, not sure if this is our machine or fault of video.
