  • well worth watching.

We wanted to see Staying On, after watching The Jewel in the Crown and learning that it was the later Paul Scott novel that paved the way for the epic series. Brilliant performances by Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard, set in the region of India we had come to know from The Jewel in the Crown, gave a new perspective to what happened to those Old India Hands who did not head home after Partition. Staying On is delicately directed and keenly observed, and while I am not quite sure how it opened the doors for the filming of The Jewel in the Crown I am very glad it did. The film is well worth watching.

  • A lovely film with believable characters.

The story is good and the actors excellent. I saw the film years ago and now I have it to keep.

  • A turning point in history

The whole ethos of this charming but slight story is that now the tables are turned and Indians are in charge, the British in their power. There is a hint of spitefulness in the way the new bosses are portrayed, as if they are personally enjoyed the new circumstances of political history. The partnership of Howard and Johnson is of course witty, seeing as they played star-crossed lovers in 'Brief Encounter' over 50 years ago. The awesome scenery in which they play out their lives seems almost as if the mountains are mocking the littleness of these people, yet in some way symbolising their strength of purpose of the extinct or almost extinct British Empire.

  • After the Raj!

Wow. Watched this after ‘The Jewel in the Crown’. It continues the tale and is set in the 1970’s. Trevor Howard and Celia Howard. Very enjoyable to see such good characters, Indian and British.
