The first eight or so episodes rip along, spiced with high-energy scenes of fires and obscene, scatological banter. Leary, who co-created the show and co-wrote many of the episodes, barrels through each hour like a force of nature, even as Tommy's increasingly erratic behaviour threatens to alienate his family and his team.

Still suffering from the events of 9/11, he is haunted by the past while adjusting to the present, which includes a separation from his wife Janet. He now resides across the street from her so that he can stay close to his children, whom he bribes to supply him with information as to mum's comings and goings. Tommy has a number of quirky fellow firefighters on Ladder 62 and he also finds relief from his woes by talking them out with his cousin Jimmy--only Jimmy died in the World Trade Center attacks.
