THE WILD ONE had been banned in the UK eleven years earlier for fear of being a bad influence on the young, but THE LEATHER BOYS presents a similar portrait of juvenile delinquency, this time with more female participation. Sidney J. Furie (THE IPCRESS FILE) directs Rita Tushingham (A TASTE OF HONEY & THE KNACK) as Dot, biker companion to Reggie (Colin Campbell). After being forced to keep their romance a secret, they decide to wed. As young delinquents, however, they are unable to keep faithful to one another, and their relationship turns destructive. Very nostalgic
I watched this years ago on TV. And thought this looks and sounds familiar. I felt like "Been There, Done That, Had the T Shirt". Only my story was in the mid 70s and not early 60s as the film is. Just watched this dvd now. Sound quality very poor, I had to turn the volume very high to follow the plot. Picture grainy. But I loved it. Great actors and story line. Crikey how Butlins thankfully has changed!! A serious subject which was handled with great delicacy. Just call me Dot. Reggie in my life was Robert and his mate Pete was Dave. The attitude from him about women, especially me, was exactly as portrayed in the film. I can look back and laugh now. Luckily the outcome was very different. I made sure of that. Motor bikes which ended up costing me an arm (and nearly) a leg and a male friend always being put before me every time was not on!! Even the granny in the film was Robert's mother and Dave wormed his way in. What a laugh. Shame the film didn't come with subtitles. Loved it all the same. Easy to watch. Of it's time ( 60's )
