  • Designed for DJs - go loud, robust, pretty comfortable. Sound quality is fairly neutral.

I've had HD250s for years which were great for any studio or HiFi use - superb sound quality, super light, super comfortable and very high noise rejection. At the time these were IIRC around £150, now discontinued they go on ebay for absolutely daft money and there's a good reason for it! These HD215s are an acceptable replacement considering you can get them new for around £50. Ideally I'd like something with even better sound quality - these aren't as superb as the HD250s, but they come close enough for the price. They are not way bassy or anything like that (a bit of fear with headphones marketed for DJs), they are reasonably neutral, just not quite as flat or revealing or just gorgeous sounding as the HD250s ... but they are decent. If anything I'd say the bass is not completely neutral, slight boominess and lack of extension very low, and there's definitely a bit of extra tizz around 8kHz ... but nothing too desparate. They're not marketed as studio headphones after all. These are very sensitive indeed. At least 6dB up or more on the HD250s. This is not always a good thing if there is any noise at all on the headphone output. (But good for DJs and good for use with portable devices). They are a fair bit heavier than the HD250s - but also feel reassuringly solid. I bet they were made like this deliberately, to stand up to DJ treatment in clubs. The screw-on 1/4" adaptor is a brilliant idea. The coily cable you may either love or hate. I imagine for DJs it's a big plus. For studio use I reckon it will be OK. At least I will be less likely to trip on the cable, which was the only problem with the HD250's 3m flat cable. Cable entry is one sided which again is a plus, you can see which side is Left without having to fuss over it even in a dark studio. For studio or other use hours on end these are not as comfortable as the 250s, but they are not bad for comfort either. They do press inwards a bit harder, again this was probably a design feature for DJs. Overall: recommended, you're unlikely to be disappointed at this modest price.
