    theatrical version

i have only watched the bonus disk, which is the theatrical release. i wanted to watch the original trilogy as they were released before the newest 'star wars' movie is released in the theaters. i am old enough to have seen the original trilogy in the theaters when they were each released. george lucas has taken a series that has been almost universally enjoyed by generations of nerds & has manager to all but destroy his legacy by constantly tinkering with this trilogy (greedo shoots first, c'mon now) & releasing a trilogy of sequels that are in my opinion unwatchable. the treatment of the theatrical disks is not as nice as lucas' 'newer' versions (so, i've heard. again, haven't bothered to watch yet) but at least with this disk we can see the film as it was released in 1977 when nothing like it had ever been seen before. still an entertaining flick, now just leave it alone, lucas.

    Was OK

Was hoping for better condition, bought this to complete my collection (My old one was borrowed & never returned) Several large scratches on discs. Have not watched the movie yet to see if it has any skips or problems.

  • Original Unaltered Theatrical 1977 Release.

I saw the original theatrical release in a theater in 1977. Hard to remember all the details. This is supposed to contain a disc with the no new CGI alterations added. I was appalled by the CGI added to the newer blu ray releases. The film presented on the "Original Unaltered Theatrical 1977 Release" disc appears to be that. Moss Isley seems to go by faster than I remember it but there is no CGI.

  • Happy, but came slightly broken

I am so happy to be able to add this Star Wars DVD to my collection being a dedicated fan. The only disappointing thing was when the package arrived in the mail, it unfortunately wasn't wrapped enough and came with the disc holder inside damaged. Other than that, I am happy with the purchase and it is in great shape otherwise.

  • The THX sound and the remastering of the video, it has Star Wars lovers renewed.

The story is strong, with the action to go with it. It is better because of the advance from the first to this the forth, it is displayed here to make it more of a Star Wars entertainment. All that have seen it say that they have watched it many times before and each time you see new things that for some reason did not notice before.

  • The only real Star Wars

Disc 2, which contains the original unaltered version of the movie, is of course the reason to buy this set. Having seen the original in theaters four times in 1977, after being reminded how pure it was I'll never watch the "special edition" again. As for the quality, I believe this was taken from a Laserdisc version. It's not terrible but not wonderful either; it kind of looks like you are viewing the movie through a mesh screen on an HDTV. It's also only 2 channel sound. Any imperfections will be forgotten the first time you see Han fire first; this is is a must-own for The original generation of Star Wars fans.

  • Han shot first!

In this time of remakes and updates, I take great pleasure in finally being able to watch the original Star Wars trilogy before GL covered it in digital Vaseline. In "A New Hope" Han is more cutthroat, there's no embarrassing cartoon Jabba and the special effects can be admired as being actually special. Does digital look better? Today, CGI easily outpaces that of twenty years ago and it shows; Special Edition graphics are muddy and mostly unnecessary. Had the digital paintbrush been used to only clean up the master and remove matte artifacts I think the Star Wars community would hold far less enmity towards GL. Indeed, perhaps even the Prequel Trilogy would be better embraced by old school fans. This limited edition (plus the other two films in the series, bought separately) was transferred from laser disc and so is the only way to legitimately own (on modern media) the Star Wars Trilogy in a letterboxed format. Other reviewers have complained that the transfer itself is poor with a 4:3 aspect ratio and washed out colors. It would seem that GL did this so people would think the SE is a superior vision. Having been born in '77, I grew up watching movies on a VCR with a Standard Definition TV (b/w and color!) and without cable. A few extra matte lines and some poor coloring? I think I can adjust! This is Star Wars, a product of the Seventies, warts and all. Enjoy it! It's just a movie!

  • The original Star Wars movie - the best of all of them & the only one worth watching over & over!

Well, I understand the attraction for all of the "prequels & sequels" to the original movie; after all, $$$ is what it is. However, the old adage of "The first is always the best" certainly holds true here. I was initially puzzled over the "re-titlement" of this film as "Episode IV", until I remembered the "prequels 1 thru 3" - all done later after the original movie. But the original movie, re-done digitally, introduced the character of Jabba the Hut as a real alien creature as opposed to Jabba depicted merely as an overweight human in the original 1977 film. Beyond that, and a few other lesser considerations, the original film is still the best of all of them, and in my opinion, the only one worth watching over & over. Like so many sequels of other films, while I've seen several of them, I remember very little of their plots & characters. But the original movie sticks with me like glue - characters & lines both - it was that good!!

  • Best of both worlds

This particular 2 DVD set has one selling point, and it is a big one for old time franchise fans. The 2006 release has both Lucas re-imaged version and the original theatrical version.
