Additional InformationSpencer Tracy stars as Father Matthew Doonan, a priest who has lost his faithà and sobriety. A replacement cleric flies into the island to relieve him of his duties, accompanied by three manacled convicts (Frank Sinatra, Gregoire Aslan, and Bernie Hamilton) on their way to prison on the main island of Tahiti. Doonan requests permission to have the convicts help him finish building the chapel at the island's hospital for children with leprosy. But as they work, a series of earthquakes threaten to awaken a slumbering volcano. As the island's inhabitants prepare to evacuate, Doonan and company are left with the responsibility of escorting the lepers to safety - a task that requires chaperoning them down the mountain, through the jungle, and out to the last evacuation boat before its departure.
In my opinion an excellent film. Good acting from Spencer Tracey and Frank Sinatra.
The violent ending as a volcano explodes and the moments of realization of imminent death are well brought through by the actors.
