Laser Arena (PC, 2000)

About this product

Product Information

TrainWreck Studios and ValueSoft present Laser Arena, a non-violent "shoot 'em up" in the vein of Unreal Tournament and Quake III Arena. While the aforementioned games are laced with violence, destructive guns and gore, this title incorporates rules similar to laser tag in that players are tagged rather than fragged.

When someone gets tagged, their laser suit deactivates and they're unable to fire their weapon for a short period of time. Throughout the round, players can be shot three times before they're tagged out of the arena. Whenever tags are made, points are awarded.

In order to claim victory, you must tag as many opponents as possible while dodging enemy fire. While these are the basic rules, there are five gameplay options including Free for All, Team Match, Duel, Domination and Mega Target that enhance the regulations.

Whereas Free for All mostly follows the basic rules, Team Match features cooperative action and collective tagging points. Conversely, Duel features one-on-one matches -- when someone is bragging about their skills, show them up with a duel!

Much like Unreal Tournament, Domination mode incorporates team-based competition. When someone runs through a domination point, it changes to the color of the respective team. You and your team must defend these points while fending off the opposition -- one hundred points are awarded per second of success.

Mega Target is an all out battle to reach various targets before your enemies, tag them and obtain the Mega Target Ability for 45 seconds. When the ability has been obtained, you must reach the Mega Target to receive a truckload of points. Unfortunately, the opposing team is doing the same thing -- they must be stopped!

While you have the option of competing against computer-controlled 'bots in the single player ladder mode, Laser Arena is essentially a multiplayer machine. You can duke it out through individual IP numbers, LAN parties or download (or use a light version of) GameSpy to find Internet servers. Internet servers accommodate all five modes and with GameSpy, you can search for the specific type of game you want.

Using id Software's Quake II engine, Laser Arena supports Open GL-based accelerator cards for improved visuals (must be Direct X compatible). There are 15 multi-tiered arenas in all, each designed in a futuristic fashion. Additionally, there are various options including high scores, video and audio setups.
