A decent MK sendoff for the sixth generation
MK Armageddon was one of those "love it, or hate it" types of games. Since this was the very last MK game, for the sixth gen consoles, it managed to satisfy most fans in the content department. Boasting over 60 iconic MK playable characters, from each and every MK up until that point, was a MK fan's wish come true. The konquest adventure story mode, makes a return with more of an linear, third person action game, opposed to the open world/sandbox RPG style of MK Deception (which I personally prefer) The Motor Kombat mode, that allows you to play a Mario Kart-style racer, featuring an MK cast, is silly and over the top, but still fun regardless of how cheesy it really is. Now, here comes THE BEST feature in this game....Kreate A Fighter mode! That's basically why I wanted to purchase this game. The customization is endless. Create your very own unique original character, rumored MK characters (such as Emerald, Pedro, Hydro or Hornbuckle), create your favorite celebrities, other video game characters....the possibilities are overwhelming. So, that's everything good with MK Armageddon. The Bad? Well, quite a bit. For starters, the fighting system. By the time this game came out in 2006, we had seen this very same kombat system since 2002's MK Deadly Alliance. That same old gameplay style had been worn out, by then. Next, is the lack of a fighting style. All characters (besides some of the bosses) only have two styles, a fighting style and a weapon style. So, it's been cut back, possibly for memory limitations. Okay...whatever. I can live with that. Now here is the worst of the worst (for me anyway) ...THERE ARE NO ORIGINAL FATALITIES! Sure, there are some new and old recycled deathtraps, but absolutely no traditional klassic original fatalities. What we have instead is this lame and boring, Kreat A Fatality nonsense. I have always hated this about Armageddon. Rather than pressing a fatality combination, and watching Sub-Zero pull out his opponents spine, watching Scorpion remove his mask and burn his victim with fire, shooting out of his skull, or Johnny Cage undercutting the opponent's head off, you need to enter strings of attacks (such as punches, kicks, ripping off arms, tearing out brains and hearts) until finally finishing off your enemy with a neck break, head rip, torso pull or a Jax-style head smash. You'd better hurry up and do what you are going to do though, because each time you perform an attack, the time meter drains. Ugh. It's just so frustrating and BORING. I mean, I would have been satisfied with the characters having just ONE original fatality, compared to this krap. Overall, MK Armageddon's first release wasn't very memorable, but about 16 years later, it's developed something of a cult following, and has garnered fans across the world, mainly due to the character roster size and it's amazing customization system. Dozens upon dozens of Youtubers are always showing off their MK Armageddon creations on their channels, so it's legacy lives on and on.
