Great scanner. Decodes NXDN digital systems.

I upgraded from a PSR-800 so I could receive agencies using NXDN digital systems. Many public safety agencies and railroads are now using NXDN systems which other scanners cannot decode. This scanner works GREAT. Excellent receive sensitivity and easy to program by simply entering your location (by city, county, or zip code). I recommend purchasing a better flexible antenna designed for 800 MHz to improve reception. Not cheap, but worth every penny for my usage.

  • Most critical review

    Poor performance

While unit appears to be well built, it's performance on P25 Phase II systems leave a lot to be desired. Unit will perform especially poorly on multi-site multi-cast systems. Decoding and audio appear to be easily overloaded by strong signals, whether from the P25 system or nearby cellular towers. When placed side-by-side with a Uniden BCD436HP with the same identical scan list, the Uniden will receive 90% more calls. Not recommended for P25 P2 listening.

  • EASY AND INTUITIVE OUT OF THE BOX

Never heard of Whistler brand until I researched digital trunking scanners and found it to be a top contender. Public Service transmissions are understandably more complex and require a more sophisticated receiver to follow transmissions coherently in real time. I was concerned about how complex one of these devices would be to operate. Bottom line: If you can run a smartphone you’ll have no problems getting this scanner up and running in 5 minutes. Intuitive quick start menu lets you enter a location by Country, State/Region, County, City, Zip Code, and allows what services you want to monitor: police, fire, public safety, and automatically programs those in. Hit “Scan” and you’re off. Then you can have it seek other frequencies not yet programmed. All that and I haven’t even read the manual yet. so there’s more. Best handheld I’ve EVER owned. I honestly don’t know how it compares with Bearcat or Radio Shack-branded competition, so take that under advisement. That said, I live in an extremely rural setting and now know if a neighbor needs help or if a local emergency is occurring, which is the whole point of having a scanner. Very thankful for this device; if you’re considering a scanner in this category, I’ve found it’s worth the money, easy to start using, and effective. Good luck in your search for a handheld digital trunking scanner!!! EDIT TO ADD: This unit does not come with an AC adapter or batteries. I got Panasonic ENELOOP NiMH rechargeable batteries to use in it, but wanted to have external power options, for obvious reasons. The scanner has a single large USB port for an external power source and data transfer, if you already have an appropriate 5V 2.1 amp adapter and the right USB cable, you’re good to go, I purchased a separate AC power supply and cable that powers the unit AND charges the batteries, so you might consider the same. I also have a 12V 2.1 amp adapter for cigarette lighter/power ports on my vehicles and save battery life for times when no external power is available.

  • Top of the line

This Whistler scanner is amazing, I absolutely love it. I have been scanning for 30 years and have owned countless scanners but this one is my new favorite. Love the ease of use, the design, the audio, the display and the simple to use programming software. If only they had addressed the simulcast distortion issues as Uniden did with the SDS series, had they dont that I can imagine anyone buying a Uniden over this unit.

  • has nice features, I think its a bit over priced but over all nice workable scanner.

digital reception works great super clear and crisp, analog not so much very low volume and does not seem to pick up all of the analog transmissions. buttons are easy to use and scanner is durable. display light does not seem to stay on very long and the option is either on all the time or on a really short time.

  • Awesome Scanner

The Whistler TRX-1 has to be the best scanner I have ever had. Programming is a learning experience but once you drop that "I don't need to read the user manual" idea, and totally read it you will be surprised how much easier it is. The reception is superior to the Whistler 1040 although it is still a great radio. I upgraded a month ago to the TRX-1 and am totally pleased.

  • Quality Scanner

Nice Features, but a bit of a learning curve to figure out. Can be a bit quirky to get frequencies configured for ones area of listening.

  • Lightweight and plays good. Poor setup for on/off push button. Push button won't work after a week.

After the first week, the on and off button quit working. I tried to turn it off, and it no longer will work. The on/ off is a push button set up. Whistler should have made it with a turn knob. Only other thing I don't like is it doesn't have a volume button to turn it down. It works great other than that. The above problem doesn't make it a good value. Costs too much to have those problems.

  • Whistler ease of use

There is a learning curve to program. Just be patient and practice. Remember it's a hobby and better to learn on your own than having someone else program it for you. Whistler free software download to PC is a must. You can update firmware and library with it. No need to spend more on Uniden SDS100.

  • so far so good

Although there is a steep learning curve on this scanner, it is worth the challenge. I live in a kind of rural area which is 100% analog, I can still get a few channels like the sheriffs posse and EMS channels and NOAA. I really like that I can take it with me wherever I go. I can get real time weather etc. if I go out in Monsoon season. I am still doing my homework on this thing, but I am going to keep at it.
