  • Easy install with a few tips

The Liftmaster 8500 wall mount garage door opener installs easy and provides a smooth and quiet operation, with a soft start and close feature. The unit requires a 110v receptacle within the reach of the ~ 6' cord. It uses a simple coupler to connect it to the torsion bar. It then turns the bar which turns the drums at each end, which use the cables to raise and lower the door. So be sure all related parts are in good working order because the cables are now doing all the lifting. No more center mounted door opener with track and chain or belt to lift the door. Frees up a lot of space and creates a clean look. The instructions say to install the opener with coupler attached to the torsion bar, then plumb the opener and secure in place with the included wall bracket. I suggest not worrying about being plumb, in case the torsion bar is not level. Let the opener hang naturally with the coupler tightened and lock in place with the mounting bracket. If you have to push the opener into plumb you are putting strain on the unit and the torsion bar end bearing. Otherwise, take the time to level the torsion bar after carefully releasing the tension on the torsion springs. The kit comes with the opener, safety sensors and brackets, a wall mount switch, a cable tension monitor switch, a lock solenoid, a ceiling light, a car remote, a hardware package, and wiring. The included wiring for the wall mount switch didn't reach. Ten more feet would be nice. Also, I found it odd that Liftmaster only includes one cable monitor switch that will stop the opener movement if the cable gains slack. What if the other (unmonitored) cable has a problem? The ceiling light requires 110v, which I was able to use the existing power that was for the old opener. The light is activated wirelessly when the opener comes on, and can also be activated from the wall mounted switch which has a built in motion sensor. A nice feature. The lock solenoid requires a 3/4" hole in the metal track. I suggest using a step drill. Its safer and creates a cleaner hole. The unit programs easily, and my original remote outdoor keypad was able to sync up with the unit. Good features, easy installation, and frees up ceiling space. Two thumbs up.

  • Did a Self Install on this Unit

I am always upgrading my garage, this unit seemed like a good replacement for my old standard garage door opener that was on the fritz. Did my own self install. I'm a big DIY guy, can fix just about anything, so it wasn't that hard, but like anything, takes some time. Installing the head unit is the easiest part, but then you have to run all the wires and understand how the limit switch device works and where to mount it. It's super easy, but for a first time install, it takes some time. If you did this every day, you would zip right through it. I love the locking mechanism on the wheel channel, get one of those tapered drill bits that does all the different sizes to drill those holes. It doesn't need to be installed, I didn't install it unit I got the drill bit a week later. I had some issues setting up the limits, not that it was hard, but just hard to understand it initially, once understood, it takes 5 minutes to set up the travel and the force limit. It only took me 30 minutes to understand how to press those little buttons to get it into each mode and then stop it at the correct place for the limits, in the end, I had to stop it before I thought when it was almost closed. The downside of this unit is that you probably don't have an outlet near it, so you'll have to run one. In the end, it took me about 4 hours to install the garage door opener, the wiring took longer than to install the head unit. I then had to run an outlet to it the following weekend. I like DIY, and the garage door opener ROCKS! It leaves the old styles behind. The only con I can think of is that it doesn't seem to have a long range for the opener as compared to my old one and it takes time to get used to it because once it receives a commend to open, it unlocks the locking mechanism, then starts opening the door, accelerates it, then comes up to normal speed. So you don't think it's opening, but it is. You get used to that after a week or so. Overall, I am very happy that I upgraded to this opener and would buy it again.

I installed the lift master 8500 in 2 hours.now I have plenty of room to park a car on my lift for storage.the motor is very quiet.and the auto lock feature is great. would never go back to the old style opener. I would recommend it to any one needing a new garage door opener.or needing more overhead room. cost a little more but its worth it.plus great quality.

  • Opens my 12x12 door perfectly

This 8500 is the smoothest, quietest door operator I'ves seen. Soft start and stop cause less wear on hinges and shaft, timer and alarm work well. Clickers were easy to program and also run my main garage door so only one is needed in each vehicle. A real asset to my shop.

  • New garage door opener for 8ft door with limited space.

Used for a door where a conventional tract style opener would not fit. Nice compact design and programming features. Quiet operation. Slight delay in opening due to the safety lock feature. If the opener lasts as advertised I will be very satisfied. Watching U-tube installation was also helpful.

  • Good to have an opener, finally

I couldn't install a conventional opener on my barn because of headroom limitations and so forth. This opener solved the problem by mounting to the torsion shaft directly. I like that nothing has to be mounted to the door itself. The directions were clear and easy to follow. Take your time and follow the directions step-by-step. Everything was included except for insulated staples to secure the various wiring. Wiring goes to a door lock, a cable tension monitor, the door control (myQ), and the 2 sensors at each side of the door, so there is a lot of wires to install. Fortunately, I had leftover insulated staples from conventional garage door openers that I could use. But if you are installing this opener, have insulated staples available before you begin.

  • Great system-will run for years!

I replaced a 2006 model like this which failed in the drive mechanism. They no longer provide parts for that model. It operates a 13 ft high door. New one was easy to install and many of the older parts like the door safety beam, the door lock and the wiring worked fine. New one has improved electronics and worked perfect on first trial. I saved about $240 with the price including hiring a young man to do the high ladder work over the quoted price from a large door company. This is the best way to operate a garage door. It attaches to the end of the axle which holds the large coil springs that balance the door. No track no springs on the cable running along above the track. Great system. It comes with a remote light which can be mounted anywhere near a wall plug and even has a motion sensor to turn on when you or a car enters the garage!

  • Liftmaster Elite Model 8500

Lots of parts to install, but once completed it was so smooth and quiet and love the auto-lock feature. The battery backup makes it a plus also.

  • Absolutely the best

I am a mechanical engineer, that built a massive barn for my projects. I have 3-10' doors and all will have these openers. I only use torsion spring doors for safety, and these openers are a dream to install. Programming lots took a couple attempts due to door weight being low when fully opened. I absolutely love this technology, and I will switch my 4 house openers as soon as I can!

  • 6 months and no trouble

Been on my 10x10 door for 6 months now. Gets operated a couple times a day and it’s been perfect! I would recommend taking it apprt and grease it and tighten the screws. Appears the final assembly was a a bit sloppy on the unit I got. But Its easy to get it all sorted out and you can’t beat the price.
