Comparing vegetable protein (TVP) mince with mycoprotein mince.
I bought this dried and unflavoured bulk vegetable protein product (TVP) to try, as a potential substitute for a well known ready to use mycoprotein containing product (Q....).
The main differences I observed were:
- price: TVP is much cheaper,
- convenience: TVP is dried, so must be re-constituted, but does not need to be stored in my small fridge freezer,
- flavour: not much difference was detected after adding stock to the TVP product, and
- texture - TVP seemed chewier than the mycoprotein product.
My conclusion: I'm cautiously optimistic about posssibly using TVP instead of mycoprotain in the future.
Buying TVP in a bulk bag and using some to prepare a meal in the kitchen avoids a lot of energy use (keeping cold, freezing, several trips to the supermarket), plus all the associated plastic packaging, so better for the planet.
