Peter Brook directs his own adaptation of Shakespeare's classic tragedy. When his daughter Cordelia refuses to flatter her father's ego with claims of devotion, Lear angrily gives the lion's share of his power to her sisters, Goneril and Regan.
Peter Brook and Paul Scofield do a gritty, authentic Lear, filmed entirely in Denmark ca 1970
One of the best King Lear versions. Gritty and unsettling. I love the "O reason not the need" speech to the daughters, who glare at Lear like coiled snakes. This DVD is impossible to find in the US, I bought this one from the UK and converted it from the European format to mp4 on my PC.
