    The real Miss Marple

Agatha Christie told (a young) Joan Hickson that "one day you will play my Miss Marple" This set is an absolute joy to see Joan Hickson as the quintessential Miss Marple. The casting is superb and attention to detail makes the era that these are set in really come to life. Other actresses played the role whilst Joan lives the part. Here indeed is an old lady "with a mind like a meat cleaver"as described by her police acquaintances (once they had seen her amazing powers of deduction and insight into the minds of the guilty parties). This collection is the ultimate entertainment for those who love a good whodunnit in general and a trip through a time when old fashioned values were the norm.Scenery is exquisite and the characters within unravelling plots of Christie's making allow the time to pass far too quickly. A quality collection that far outshines todays versions that may contain a multitude of stars but lack the magic of Joan Hickson.I shall return to these CDs again and again.

  • Most critical review

    Something from Christi again ...

Agatha Christi has 'fed' unbelievable amount of directors. This collection is one of many versions. It's interesting to compare. Honestly, this Miss Marple is not my most loved, but it depends from who is watching. For the others it maybe will be the best ...

  • Agatha Christie's Miss Marple at her best.

Joan Hickson is the very best actor in the portrayal of Agatha Chriistie's Miss Marple. Another positive is that these adaptations have been closely scripted in portraying and sticking to the stories in the books. This series is produced, with beautiful scenes and the right actors selected for the role that they play. An excellent choice for a true fan of Agatha chrisie.

  • EXCELLENT SET

Have purposely waited until I have viewed all the discs before reviewing. This is a great set with Joan Hickson as Miss Marple - she is ideally suited for this part. These were all the AC novels which featured Miss Marple with no adaptions or added characters. They are shown in the original format or 4 X 3 and. although not "sharply" defined there is a great nostalgia about the productions, with excellent period sets which cannot be criticised. Highly enjoyable. All the discs were in great condition.

  • Light relief, during dark times

Joan Hickson was the best Miss Marple and so I jumped at the chance to get a set, having watched all of them now I know my decision to buy was right! being stuck indoors during the COVID 19 outbreak it has helped to break the day up, but I will watch them again and again, during normal times, although not back to back episodes.

  • Christie’s Choice of Marple

The excellent, if slightly dated (to the era of the programme making rather than the story) but does justice to the Agatha Christie originals. Joan Hickson was Christie’s first choice to play Marple but sometimes Hickson seems a bit too vague, you want to give her a shake to solve the murders before too many people get killed

  • miss marple and her era

Arived on time; in good order as described; havent' watched all the discs yet, but first one worked well with out any problems. All other disgs unscratched. Miss marple: a glorious visit to the past (1950's i'd say); very well recreated with authentic costumes, housing furniture, vehicles and, mainly accents and vocabulary. Rather surprising to se that modern actors can't shed modern idiom all the time, but there you are. However the plots are very contrived and bear little critical analysis.

  • Joan Hickson is the Real Miss Marple

Joan Hickson is simply the best Miss Marple. There are many other pretenders to the "throne", and each have there strengths and weaknesses. Joan Hickson is however the complete package, in settings which Mrs Christie would have recognized. This set is handsomely packaged, to much so really as it takes up too much space on the shelf, but that is a minor criticism.

  • A traditional approach to some of Agatha Christine's Miss Marple adventures

A 5 star review from me but that is very subjective. I remember watching this series on TV decades ago so the nostalgia factor is high fo| me. I doubt that younger people would be as impressed as the flow of camera work can feel quite clunky compared to the flow of film action now. It's a step back into the past so if you allow for this you will enjoy the programmes.

  • A must for avid dvd collectors

My vhs collection was worn out so I had to replace it with the dvd one. A great series with the best of Miss Marples out there, featuring the beloved Joan Hickson. A must for all dvd collections.
