SynopsisBorn in a log cabin to poor farmers, Millard Fillmore accomplished more than he ever thought possible when he became president of the United States. Fillmore served as vice president under Zachary Taylor. He ascended to the presidency in 1850, when President Taylor became ill and died suddenly. As President, Fillmore developed American business. He also signed the Compromise of 1850, a controversial bill meant to bridge the gap between the North and South over the issue of slavery. While the Fillmore presidency was not the most dramatic in the countrys history. Fillmores commitment to hard work and practicality stabilized the nation in tumultuous times.
