DCI copper gap wedge with C-grind serves as dual wedge
The 2017 emphasis on relieved heel and toe areas for wedges was actually introduced by Ping a quarter century ago, and copied by Titleist two decades ago. There are several Titleist models featuring "triple grind soles", and most of the half dozen iterations of the DCI series have the C-grind feature. The beryllium copper model looks a bit more compact than the stainless steel wedges, but measurement shows them to be almost identical. This is because the head is darker in shade, and appears smaller. For firm or dry turf this club is very versatile, and can cut down into cabbage areas to pop the ball out of the garbage, especially if the face is hooded a little. And the versatility is again apparent from firm sand traps, the face can be played excellently from both square and open positions. This reviewer lives in the desert, and the ever-present wind has removed all the fine-grained sand from the bunkers, leaving a crusty, firm situation that this wedge works much better than the wide-soled wedges best reserved for sugary, masonry sand like in the Gulf Coast. There is a lot of weight low in the clubhead, and it is really easy to hit the ball high. Even partial swings produce high trajectory. The rounded upper toe of the DCI is preferred by many golfers, but I like the higher, sharper toe of the Ping Eye 2+ copper or steel wedges. When the clubface is fanned way open, one has more hitting surface to slide into the sand with the Eye 2+ design. Plus, the Ping wedges had the closer together grooves that the USGA said produced too much groove area due to the beveled shoulders on the grooves' edges. Both these wedges can be used as dual wedges for fairway, rough, and sand traps, and I do not even need to carry a sand wedge. I walk and carry my clubs, so lugging one fewer club the 7 miles of an 18-hole round is significant. I recommend either of the clubs described. The Callaway X Jaws wedges also had this same C-grind soles about a decade ago, and the DCI, Eye 2+, and X Jaws can be purchased for a third of the cost of the latest Vokey, Ping, or Callaway designs.
