Product Information
Based on the groundbreaking 1912 play by Stanley Houghton, this adaptation is considered to be one of Britain's finest silent films. At the time of its debut, the play HINDLE WAKES shook up audiences and critics by challenging conventional portrayals of female sexuality. When Fanny Hawthorne, an independent working class girl in a Lancashire milltown engages in casual sex, she causes quite a controversy. Fanny must risk being rejected by her community for not prescribing to the social norms expected of young women in Edwardian society. HINDLE WAKES addressed the hypocrisy and double standard surrounding male and female sexuality, which until this point, had not been the subject of a film. This 1927 adaptation provides a background for the events and characters in the original play. With stunning shots of the Blackpool rides including the Big Dipper and Helter Skelter, and exquisite ballroom scenes, Maurice Elvey infuses Houghton's story with realism and a documentary-type feel.Product Identifiers
