Additional InformationDriven by an extravagant, tour-de-force performance by Al Pacino, SCENT OF A WOMAN is the story of Frank Slade (Pacino), a blind, retired army colonel who hires Charlie Simms (Chris O'Donnell), a poor college student on the verge of expulsion, to take care of him over Thanksgiving weekend. At the beginning of the weekend, Frank takes Charlie to New York, where he reveals to the student that he intends to visit his family, have a few terrific meals, sleep with a beautiful woman and, finally, commit suicide. The film follows the mis-matched pair over the course of the weekend, as they learn about life through their series of adventures. Though the story is a little contrived and predictable, it pulls all the right strings, thanks to O'Donnell's sympathetic supporting role and Pacino's powerful lead performance, for which he won his first Academy Award. SCENT OF A WOMAN is based on the 1975 Italian film PROFUMO DI DONNA.

  • Most critical review

    False economy

A great film with several magic moments, but this copy suffers from intermittent sound problems. Just enough to annoy, not enough to make it worth the expense of returning. It was only a couple of quid so I guess you get what you pays for.

  • Not what it seems to be but riveting

I ordered this as friend recommended l it. I started watching and I thought it wasn't for me. However so glad I hung on in there as it was completely different and much better than my original perception. Values upheld and have watched it several times since ensuring I understood all the nuances. Brill!

  • Al Pacino excels himself, recommended.

Al Pacino performs with sensitivity and nuance the role of a blind person who retains personality and all the emotions we are heir to. What starts as a contentious brittle human being eventually engages our compassion. Good script, recommended.

  • Superb acting and interesting story-line.

Al Pacino was superb in this; his ability to play a blind man convincingly as well as the terrific speech he made at the school towards the end of the film - first rate! The only disappointment for me was when he was dancing the Tango. I was hoping he was dancing to Leonard Cohen's song - Dance me to the end of love - as seen in the You-Tube video.
