    Well-made historical WW2 movie

I already saw this movie years ago and I wanted to add it to my collection to share it with my children who are learning about WW2. It is a good and informative movie overall with a quite accurate description of the events leading up and comprising the battle of Midway. It goes very well with another movie I recently purchased (Tora! Tora! Tora!) a few years earlier movie describing the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour. In fact if there is one criticism is that Midway borrows a few aerial and battle sequences from this earlier movie. On the other hand it also incorporate quite seamlessly a good number of original WW2 battle footage.

So so war film portraying the Pacific Battle of Midway. Only medium budget and an aging US cast, though Japanese cast are very good.

A sequence of big war films were produced 1962-1977, starting with the Longest Day and ending with A Bridge Too Far. Midway (1976) was the last large-scale American production, telling the story of the US's first big carrier victory in 1942, following the Pearl Harbour disaster. Early on, the film is dominated by Charlton Heston, still very energetic in his early 50s. It also features many of the Japanese cast from Tora, Tora, Tora!, who plot an invasion of the US base on Midway island, supported by their main carrier fleet. However, the film gets bogged down in the middle third. There's an interracial romance, Fonda & Holbrook look too old and tired to direct operations, and it's disappointing that Mitchum is relegated to acting from his bed. The action picks up in the final third, with planes from either side searching for enemy carriers, and carrying out near-suicide bombing missions. In many ways, the Japanese cast are stronger, but this invites unfortunate comparison with the bigger budget Tora, Tora, Tora! Here, WWII stock footage is blended in with new film, made deliberately grainy, and it's clear the production was strapped for cash. The final result pays a measure of tribute to those who fought at Midway, but the film fails to rise to the level of the classic big budget war films of the 60s and 70s. It is particularly glaring that there is no decent portrayal of the huge effort made to repair the Yorktown carrier in record time before the main battle.

  • Game changer

The film was made in the same era as tora tora tora and re-enacts the pivotal battle of the Pacific theater of operations. The film itself has survived quite well given its age and actors portraying the ww2 characters are good in their roles and the actual wartime archival footage is great.
