This poignant 1930s comedy features nearly flawless performances by an all-star cast under the deft direction of George Cukor. Based on the successful play by Edna Ferber and George Kaufman, DINNER AT EIGHT is the tale of a socially scheming Park Avenue hostess (Billie Burke) who performs a series of clever manipulations to bring about a dinner party for an aristocratic English couple. In the process, she largely ignores the troubles facing her ailing husband (Lionel Barrymore); unwittingly, her choice of guests creates a web of intrigue, malice, and romance. Jean Harlow is exceptional as the shrewd wife of Billie's business adversary, as is John Barrymore, in a powerful, somewhat autobiographical turn as a fading star who drinks his future away. Silent-film performer Marie Dressler made a comeback in the role of the aging stage actress Carlotta.

A classic
A classic worth having if you enjoy the genre. Some of the biggest stars of the time are in this with some great lines. It is quite dated if thats a problem for you but its very representative of the period. This is an ensemble piece with more big stars in it than normal much like Grand Hotel and has the same feeling and some if the same actors. Jean Harlow is the stand out here with most if the good lines and all if the visuals and wardrobe. While it has some funny moments its not a really a comedy there's actually a lot if melodrama in it which is actually some of the tiresome parts.

A classic that simply doesn't show its age. Brilliant screenplay based on a brilliant stage play. Bullet-proof casting (can't think of anyone else in the roles), terrific acting and timing, twists and turns and surprises, John Barrymore doing a comedic vamp on the over-acting of John Barrymore, and on and on and on. If you love classic theater and classic films, you should buy a copy of Dinner at Eight. And, by the way, all's well in the end, when the drawing-room door closes on the guests in the dining-room, and they all settle down for Dinner at Eight. Bon apetit!!

The perfect example of a '30's movie -- wonderfully entertaining, plus Jean Harlow at her most glamorous. Marie Dressler steals the whole movie, tho. I highly recommend this to anyone who is a fan of classic movies!
