About this product

Product Information

An extraordinary memoir about a woman's discovery of education, its transformative power and the price she has to pay for it. THE MULTI-MILLION COPY BESTSELLER 'An amazing story, and truly inspiring. The kind of book everyone will enjoy. IT'S EVEN BETTER THAN YOU'VE HEARD.' - Bill Gates Selected as a book of the year by AMAZON, THE TIMES, SUNDAY TIMES, GUARDIAN, NEW YORK TIMES, ECONOMIST, NEW STATESMAN, VOGUE, IRISH TIMES, IRISH EXAMINER and RED MAGAZINE A Book of the Decade, 2010-2020 (Independent) ________________________ Tara Westover and her family grew up preparing for the End of Days but, according to the government, she didn't exist. She hadn't been registered for a birth certificate. She had no school records because she'd never set foot in a classroom, and no medical records because her father didn't believe in hospitals. As she grew older, her father became more radical and her brother more violent. At sixteen, Tara knew she had to leave home. In doing so she discovered both the transformative power of education, and the price she had to pay for it. ________________________ From one of TIME magazine's 100 most influential people of 2019 Shortlisted for the 2018 BAMB Readers' Awards Recommended as a summer read by Barack Obama, Antony Beevor, India Knight, Blake Morrison and Nina Stibbe

  • Most favourable review

A story of abuse and finding the inner strength to overcome it.

The book was in good condition however the story, which I was reading for a book club, was really quite depressing. It was well written, but the abuse suffered by the author made reading it very difficult.

  • Most critical review

A difficult read but worth it

I didn't always enjoy reading this book, it's a hard read in places, but an insight into different ways of living and thinking. Apparently a true story about people who are still alive, which, among other things, demonstrates patriachy, female submission, children wrongly assuming guilt and desperate to please and be loved by their parents even into adulthood. Early on I found it a bit too solid but the last few chapters were compelling. I am glad I read it but I won't be reading it again.

  • Educated - very apt title. Education helped change the direction of the author's future for the better.

A very poignant struggle for a young woman who had dreams to go in a different direction to the one that was expected of her. Strength and determination won in the end. Compelling, sad, but courageous.

  • Spellbinding, courageous, enduring, unputdownable

An amazing biography, beautifully written story of tragedy, severely let down by family. Inconcievable that this could happen in such very recent history. Power to an incredible girl, her strength & courage. Long may that continue in her life. A lady who deserves love, respect and long lived happiness. Couldn't put it down. Want to know for of her successes and future happiness in future books

  • EDUCATED GOOD BOOK

When i started reading this book i was unsure if it was for me. Im really enjoying it. The father has such a hold over his children until they reach their late teens then for some it changed others it never does. This would be a good read for anyone. Xx

  • Barn building family against the government

Full of detail of alternative U.S. rural lifestyle, including barn building and scrap metal work. The family chose to be isolated even within their community so education was sorely lacking and consequently some family beliefs damaging.

Only half way through but really enjoying this book. Easy to read, gives you lots to think about. From understanding love, control, abuse, education, family, identity.
