This is a wonderful trilogy of plays. The first is most timely with terrorists holding the state to ransom with the threat of setting off an atomic bomb. Harry Andrews, a sterling actor, plays the Prime Minister who must negotiate peace between the authorities and the terrorists. The third play is quite intriguing with Roger Daltrey playing a murderous thief who discovers a yuppy couple in a derelict house where money has been hidden. Slightly overwrought in the playing it is still a prescient play about the redistribution of the old population of the East End, when houses were bought cheaply and refurbished adding thousands to their value. The second play is brilliantly cast with Alfred Burke as a cold eyed monster who is the Chairman of a Gentleman's club. With Ronald Pickup, Andrew Ray, Nigel Stock and others this is a very engrossing piece of work. If you take each play as if "staged" rather than having the filmic look of today's television you will find ample reward in this excellent collection. Sadly there are no extra features, or contextualisation of the plays, simply three dramas ITV employed Nigel Kneale on from the early sixties to the mid eighties. One note of interest is that in the first play, the Crunch, there is an actor who is remarkably similar to Sir David Jason - in fact, it is his brother Arthur White who also appeared with David Jason in A Touch of Frost. Well worth the investment.
