ReviewsNew York Times - ...Rewarding....Beginning with [Irons's], all of the principal performances are terrific..., Rolling Stone - ...Alternately sincere and sinister, droll and decadent, Irons makes an ambiguous figure vividly real and disturbing. It's a tricky, triumphant portrayal..., Los Angeles Times - ...Brilliant....Its performances and observations are absolutely on-target..., USA Today - "...An unexpected stitch....Silver is superb, Irons is transcendent..." -- 3 1/2 out of 4 stars
Additional InformationREVERSAL OF FORTUNE, based on defence attorney Alan Dershowitz's book, is a hypnotically eerie exploration of a dark, ambiguous event in the life of a wealthy socialite couple. Dershowitz (Ron Silver) is hired by Claus von Bulow (Jeremy Irons) to defend him against charges that he attempted to murder his wife, Sunny (Glenn Close), who lies in a coma. As Dershowitz, aided by his eager law students, scrambles for ways to puncture the veracity of the charges against von Bulow, Sunny narrates flashback scenes that offer a frosted window into both the events leading up to her coma-inducing collapse and the strangely cold and alienating world of the superrich.<BR>Irons's von Bulow, a brilliant Academy Award-winning characterisation, provides the creepy, complicated centre for a film in which every surface is slippery and every truth has trailing behind it a sinuous shadow of doubt. Silver energises the film with his portrayal of the tenacious, obsessive defence attorney, and Close adds a vital layer with her biting narration and her work in flashback scenes as a woman sadly drifting in a drug-addled haze through her moneyed world. Director Barbet Schroeder, who garnered Academy Award nominations for both Best Director and (with co-writer Nicholas Kazan) Best Screenplay, orchestrates with a light touch, preserving the buoyancy of a film that is deeply textured yet tight as a riddle.

  • Based on a true story

Reversal of Fortune (MGM 22939DVD) Good picture, good sound. Includes original theatrical trailer. The film itself is well paced, absorbing, with good acting all round and Jeremy Irons became the fifteenth British born man to win a lead role Oscar.

  • an account of a Rhode Island Case

As an overall movie the story line is poor but as a somewhat documentary it may be acceptable. A rather aging teenager Dershowitz the defence attorney initially says no to technicality to be exploited - but his whole supposedly brilliant defence was based upon technicality namely on ''circumstantial evidence'' in ruling judge's own book which he authored earlier However we dont know the real truth in the process of getting Mr Bulow off the hook . Details of who was paid what etc was not mentioned in the narrative . Only hint of that was made through an unstable drug dealer character under the guise of inadmissible evidence .... Lastly - in real life .Reversal of Fortune does not happen. Under no circumstances no ordinary guy ( white or black ) could avoid 30 years or electric chair for those very well evidenced contemporaneous events .. A genuinely very unsavoury movie to watch ... Casting was dead accurate and acting was not best but above average within the limitations of characters that they relied on . Basically it is a movie about *what money can buy* which was not denied by Dersh at the beginning anyway. He in roundabout way lectured the his factitious disciples * How opposition is buying a private prosecutor How he is going to sell what is needed to encounter ... !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes dear Justitia - it is a documentary about where you eventually arrived at ....
