  • Top notch cast, superb action

This is a classic film that I had not seen for years and was reminded to have another look at having seen Anthony Hopkins in Westworld. I'm very glad I did as I was reminded of just how good it is. Firstly, the all star cast are all spot on - Dirk Bogarde, Michael Caine, Elliot Gould, Hardy Kruger etc. etc. - I was quickly drawn in and appreciated the situation their characters were in right away. But for me the stand outs are Anthony Hopkins as Colonel Frost leading in an increasingly worsening and desperate situation , Sean Connery trying to take command when everything is going wrong and Robert Redford knocks it oput of the park as major Cook taking on a suicide mission to cross the Rhine in little boats in daylight to caoture a bridge. Which brings me on the action sequesnces. For a film from the 70's the action really holds up againast today's films, I've mentioned the bridge crossing, which is a highlight, but there are loads more - repelling the panzer tank on the bridge, the flamethrower, the escape on the jeep etc. and that's before you get in to the scenes that are only a few seconds on film but must have taken hours to set up - for example when the tank column is trying to get through a liberation party, or just when Edward Fox arrives at his HQ, which has dozens of perfectly parked trucks, jeeps and tanks outside. This is Richard Attenborough at the top of his game and you can see his clear influence on Christopher Nolan. Overall this is more than 2 packed hours, it's a thought provoking film that has stayed with me and I often consider what I would have done in the same situation.
