Additional InformationStarting with Ireland's bloody Easter Rebellion of 1916 and ending with his untimely death, this brilliantly photographed epic from director Neil Jordan tells the charged story of Michael "Mickey" Collins. An IRA founder whose innovative guerrilla tactics succeeded in bringing freedom from British rule, Collins remains a controversial but much respected political figure, who is skillfully embodied in the film by Liam Neeson. Aidan Quinn plays his longtime friend Harry, and Julia Roberts, sporting a nice brogue and lovely period costumes, is Katie, the woman they both love.<BR>Jordan staged most of the battles, riots, ceremonies, and speeches at their actual locations in Ireland with a cast of thousands and a great eye for period detail. The result is a film that is both historically evocative and stunningly beautiful thanks to the breathtaking cinematography of Chris Menges. The film is also surprisingly nonjudgmental in its depiction of Collins's appalling but inarguably successful methods of "bloody mayhem." Stephen Rea and Alan Rickman costar, with Elliot Goldenthal contributing a rich Oscar-nominated score.
ReviewsVariety - ...Intelligent, enormously accomplished....Menges' images are seriously artful yet tremendously vital, and it is great to see a master doing what he does best..., Sight and Sound - ...[A] powerful film..., Entertainment Weekly - "...A classic performance [from Neeson]....[Roberts is] charming..." -- Rating: B+, Rolling Stone - ...A passionate, probing epic...

Need subtitles if you aren’t Irish

The film is a true story about Ireland’s fight to become an independent state. Friends become divided and the inevitable happens. I would have needed the subtitles to hear all the dialogue as I couldn’t always make out what the Irish tongue was saying. The DVD I purchased was either a copy or a dud so I didn’t fully get all the words but nevertheless s very good story

I am SO confused right now...

I thought that this would be a nice film about the third member of the Apollo 11 mission, imagine my disappointment on discovering that it was actually Liam Neeson seeking Scotch or Welsh independence or something like that! it was a poor performance by Neeson, even worse than in Schindler's List, not one of his stellar appearances like in Taken I, Taken II, Taken III, Taken IV, or that one where he gets to fight a wolf... boo!

  • Micheal Collins not the spaceman!

Informative part of Irish history well told and acted. Would have been better if the film had been on one side of the dvd only so you didn't have to turn it over for the last 15/20 minutes.

  • Michael Collins

I think it's a great film based on a true story. Its as close as you will get to that era, in terms of pictures and sound n a film, and there is actual footage in the film. If you like your Irish history it's certainly worth a watch.

  • Michael Collins - Irish revolutionary leader

Liam Neeson gives a convincing portrayal of the Irish freedom fighter Michael Colins, and the film is fast moving and filled with impressive action scenes, though many are brutal and very violent. At times the battle scenes I found confusing as it was difficult to work out just who was fighting who! The film offers a dour and realistic perception of Ireland in the early part of the 20th Century, and the political situation comes across as intense and grim. Julia Roberts appears in a small role as Collins' girlfriend, adding some brightness to an otherwise cheerless scenario. Overall, this is an engrossing film that offers an insight into the confusing world of Irish political history and merits more than one viewing.

  • The Greatest Irish Revolutionary

I could not be happier with this purchase!! I was a bit shocked about how cheap it is but it’s in perfect condition and quality. Liam Neeson brought Michael Collins back to life in the most beautiful way through this movie, it’s wonderful. I recommend this movie to any Irish Republican or anyone who’s just curious about Irish history.
